Members of Parliament (MPs) yesterday denounced the Local Government Act terming it as not in conformity with the country's constitution.

Foreign Minister Dr Tipu Moni yesterday said bilateral ties with India are important but Bangladesh will do whatever necessary to protect her interest by keeping national interest above all else.
"It's not the question of hate or love-the crucial thing is national interest," she said responding to a question about India's Tipaimukh dam at a regular press briefing at the Foreign Ministry.

With the slogan "Higher education for bringing democracy," jubilant celebrations and fanfare by the students and teachers yesterday marked the Dhaka University Day, the 88th founding anniversary of the country's leading university.
Vice Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique formally inaugurated the day-long festival by airing balloons and cutting a ceremonial cake in the morning.
Teachers, present and former students of DU were present on the occasion.

Home Ministry seems to be traumatised after fall of Home Minister Shahara Khatun at her Minto Road residence on Monday. She is reported to have sustained serious waist injury and awaits treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.
She underwent initial treatment at a city clinic under her colleague Dr Ruhul Haque, who is also a cabinet minister.

State Minister for Power and Energy Advocate Shamsul Hoque Tuku yesterday said that the loadshedding has reduced significantly after the introduction of the daylight saving time (DST).
There had been five to six bouts of loadshedding a day in Dhaka city before the introduction of BST. It now occurs three to four times a day, he told reporters after a meeting with the Bangladesh Grey and Finished Fabrics Mills and Exporters Association (BGFFMEA) leaders at the Secretariat. The review committee on the disposal of politically motivated cases yesterday decided dropping 66 more cases, which were filed only to persecute politicians.
The decision was taken at the third meeting of the committee held at the secretariat with its chief State Minister for Law and Justice Advocate Quamrul Islam in the chair. Home Secretary Abdus Sobhan Sikder and senior officials concerned attended the meeting. ||

Former Dhaka University vice-chancellor and noted political scientist Dr Emajuddin Ahmed, entangled in a contempt-of-court charge, will appear in person before the High Court today at 10:30 am to make his submission on the troubling question.
