Wangala, the harvest festival of the Garos (Mandi), was held yesterday in the capital, where 10,000 of the tribe live.

Wangala, a religious festival of the Garos, is held in honour of Saljong, the Sun-god of fertility. The celebration of the Wangala festival marks the end of a period of toil, which brings good output of the fields. It also signifies the onset of winter.

Nearly 200,000 Garos live in Bangladesh, mostly in Mymensingh.

The day-long festival was marked by a fair, music and dances. Many people from other parts of the country also joined the festival.

Home minister Shahara Khatun, disaster management minister Abdur Razzak were present a function held in celebration of the festival.
