Indo-Bangla secretary-level talks end: Terrorism figures in three major deals finalised

Amid signs of growing tacit cooperation against terrorists, insurgents and criminals; Bangladesh and India have finalised the drafts of three major agreements to enhance formal bilateral collaboration against law-breakers of either country.
Home Secretary Abdus Sobhan Sikder and his Indian counterpart G K Pillai finalised the drafts of Agreements on Mutual Legal Assistance on Criminal Matters, Transfer of Sentenced Persons and Combating International Terrorism, Organized Crime and Illicit Drug Trafficking.

Khaleda reelected BNP chairperson

UNB, Dhaka

BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was yesterday reelected unopposed the party chairperson for a three-year term subject to scrutiny of her nomination paper.
Khaleda Zia was reelected unofficially as no other candidate either collected or submitted nomination paper for contesting the election to the post of the BNP high command.
The scheduled time to collect and submit nomination paper for contesting the election expired at 6pm today.
BNP office secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, on behalf of Khaleda Zia, submitted the nomination paper to returning officer Dr RA Gani at the party's Naya Paltan central office at 4:30 pm today.

Tipaimukh Dam: British MP demands Int’l enquiry

British parliamentarian George Galloway yesterday demanded international enquiry into the proposed Tipaimukh Dam by India.
"We demand an international investigation on whether the dam has any negative effect on a section of both Bangladesh and Indian population," Galloway said at a crowded press conference at Dhaka Reporters' Unity auditorium yesterday.
He said the Tipaimukh Dam is not an issue that concerns only Bangladesh and India. "As it has consequences on the climate and environment, it is an international issue," he added.

This is the view of Kutubdia Island, which lies a kilometre off the coast of Cox's Bazar on the south-east coast of Bangladesh. Just ten years ago, one of the largest tracts of manmade mangrove, or 'parabon', forest in South Asia stretched along the Kutubdia channel here. Forest guard Abu Taher told the news agency, "The parabon has disappeared.

Launch capsize toll rises to 84: Tarique, Coco, Mamun sued

The government yesterday filed cases against Tarique Rahman, Arafat Rahman Coco and Giasuddin al Mamun, as owners of MV Coco-4, following the Bhola launch disaster that killed over 84 people on November 27 at Nazirpur under Badarpur union of Lalmohon Upazila in Bhola.
Md Shafique Ayub, Inspector, Department of Shipping, filed the case with Metropolitan Magistrate Marine Court, Dhaka against Tareque Rahman, Managing Director and Directors Arafat Rahman Coco and Giasuddin Al Mamun of Messrs Rahman Shippers Bangladesh Ltd.

Police eviction protested

A police team allegedly raided a house and tortured women and children mercilessly at Jatrabari in the city recently.
The law enforcers, at the dead of night, also took the family members to the Jatrabari Police Station and forced them to sign an undertaking, the victims alleged at a press conference at the Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association yesterday.
A case has been filed against the officer in charge of Jatrabari Police Station Moniruzzaman, sub-inspectors Jiarat Hossain and Mazharul Islam, audit officer Mazharul Islam and few other police personnel.

12th anniversary of CHT peace deal observed

The country yesterday celebrated the 12th anniversary of peace accord that had ended more than two decades of tribal insurgency when an estimated 20,000 people were killed and thousands were forced to take refuge in neighbouring India.
The government, political, social and cultural groups and non-government organisations undertook a series of programme to mark the anniversary as rallies and colourful street marches beating traditional tribal drums featured the celebration in the rugged hill districts of Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban.

Tk 350 crore direct diesel subsidy for farmers

The Ministry of agriculture will disburse Taka 350 crore as direct diesel subsidy for the country's 90 lakh farmers from January next to facilitate further agriculture production during the upcoming Boro season.
"Each farmer will get the subsidy directly to buy necessary amount of diesel through a coupon from the particular dealer. The amount of subsidy in cash will be Taka 5.00 per liter for each coupon, which will be available in any nearby nationalized or listed private bank," Agriculture Secretary C Q K Mustaq Ahmed told BSS here on Wednesday.
