Call to keep food poison free

Speakers at a roundtable yesterday called upon the government to take initiatives to keep food poising free and preserve the rights of consumers to save them from deceive and poising food.

They also called for amending the 'The Pure Food (Amnedmend) Act 2005' soon saying that the unscrupulous traders of the country are mixing poison, formalin and other polluted things with food taking advantages of the loopholes of law.

Bangladesh Super Market Owners Association and the Daily Destiny jointly organised the roundtable on 'Safe Food and Responsibility to Preserve the Interest of Consumers' at the National Press Club in the city.

President of the association Niaz Rahim presided over the programme while professors of Dhaka University Dr Khurshid Jahan Haque and Dr Khaleda Islam jointly presented the keynote paper on the matter.

They mentioned in the keynote that about one crore people of Dhaka city everyday take about 50 metric tons vegetables and 30 metric tons of these vegetables are mixed with poisoned pesticide. So the people of Dhaka city everyday eat harmful food, they added.

Moderated by associate editor of the Daily Destiny Mohammad Rafiqul Amin, the roundtable was addressed, among others, by Dr Arup Ratan Chowdhury, Prof Dr Munirul Islam, Dr Md Nazrul Islam, Prof Sadia Ahmed, journalist Altaf Mahmud, Dr Shah Mahfuzur Rahman, Dr MM Monowar and Syed Alamgir.
