Reaction of political parties

Leaders of different political parties, socio-cultural organisations, business, trade and professional bodies in separate statements hailed the verdict of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court in the Bangabandhu murder case.

They termed the judgment as a landmark in establishing the rule of law in the country and said the nation has been freed from the stigma through this verdict.

Acting president of Dhaka City unit of the ruling Awami League MA Aziz and Acting General Secretary and State Minister for Law in a statement expressed their satisfaction over the judgment. They said the verdict reflected the expectation of the 15 crore people of the country those were waiting for 34 years for it. President of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) Manjurul Ahsan Khan and General Secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim in a statement demanded holding trial of the people those sheltered the killers of Bangabandhu and conspirators both of local and foreign nationals.

They also called upon the government to start the process for trial of the war criminals.

President of Ganatontri Party Mohammad Afzal and Acting General Secretary Sharafat Ali Heera in a statement said justice was ensured through the epoch making judgment.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujaheed in a statement said his party believes in the rule of law.

"We are respectful to the judgment of the apex court which was made after a long hearing," he said.

Acting President of Muslim League Advocate Nurul Huque Majumder said his party is respectful to the law of the land and all should abide by the verdict of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.

President of Supreme Court Bar Association AFM Mesbahuddin and Secretary SM Rezaul Karim said the judgment will be a milestone in establishing the rule of law.

They demanded the government to bring back the fugitive convicts from abroad immediately.

Secretary General of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) in a statement termed the verdict a significant milestone in establishing the rule of law.

He said the FBCCI leaders believe that through the verdict the nation has been freed from a long black chapter of the history.

The organisations those made statements expressing their satisfaction over the judgment include Bangladesh Awami Juba League, Bangladesh Chhatra Union, Bangabandhu Krishibid Parishad, Amir and Amir Law Associates, Bangabandhu Adarsha Mullayan and Gabeshana Sangsad, Awami Secchasebok League, Youth Gono Forum, Bangladesh Muktijoddha Kallayan Foundation, Muktijoddha Projonma Command, Bangabandhu Shishu Academy, Bangladesh Polytechnic Teachers' Association (BPTA), Bangladesh Civil Service Trade Association, Bangabandhu Lalitkala Academy, Krishibid Institution, Bangladesh and Bangladesh Civil Service (Agriculture) Association.
