'Steps taken to strengthen ACC’ Staff Reporter Bangladesh is completely respectful to the United Nations (UN) Convention Against Corruption and the government would take initiatives for full implementation of it, said Law Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed yesterday. "It is essential to detect and remove the limitations of the least developed countries (LDCs) capacities in the way to implement the UN Convention against corruption," he said while speaking at the 'Conference of the States Parties to the UN Convention Against Corruption' in Doha, Qatar, according to a press release issued by the ministry yesterday. The Law Minister who is also in the charge of the Ministry of Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, presented steps in the conference so far taken by the government for the successful implementation of UN Convention Against Corruption. He also presented Bangladesh Country Report. Barrister Shafique said the government has taken measures to strengthen the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) by reorganising the anti-graft body. "The ACC is now exercising its power independently and conducing a programme to create mass awareness at the grassroots level. The governments initiated measures to amend some laws time befitting and up to date so that the corrupts could not escape through the loopholes of the law," he said. He sought international cooperation in building a corruption free Bangladesh. Money Laundering Prevention Law, Rights to Information Act and Financial Intelligence Unit are among the steps taken by the government in eliminating corruption from the country, he mentioned. The conference that started on November 9 will concluded on November 13.
