At least 30 people were injured in a clash between two groups of Awami League activists at Tojumuddin Baz-aar in Tojumuddin upazila on Friday night.

Police quoting local people said there was a longstanding enmity between district AL general secretary Wahidullah Jashim and president Abul Kashem Talukdar over establishing supremacy in Moheshkhali coastal fishing area.

Witnesses said the clash broke out when Kashem group went to catch fish in the area. At one stage Kashem's men took position in the bazaar area and vandalized some shops of Jashim group. Later, a chase and counter chase took place between the two groups that left 30 people injured from both sides.

Among the injured Sultan, 35, Faruk, 22, Joynal, 50, Rafique, 32, Sufian, 35, Farid, 25, Munna, 25, Sohagh, 30, Mahiuddin, 30, Abbas, Hanif and Afzal were admitted to the Tojumuddin health complex and Sadar hospital.

Additional police have been deployed in the area to fend off further trouble. None was arrested in this connection.
