BSMMU, DMCH close swine flu wards: Death toll now 6: With emergency in US, country needs to be on alert

Three persons died of swine flu in the last one month raising the death toll in the country to six. A total of 800 people, of which 120 were attacked by H1N1 virus during the period, are so far affected by swine flu.
Prof Dr Mahmudur Rahman , Director, Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) talking to the newsman said that the magnitude of H1N1 virus has been reduced.
He said that six people have so far died of swine flu out of 800 swine flu affected in the country.

BATEXPO attains less spot order, export falls by 26.83pc

This year's Bangladesh Apparel and Textile Exposition (BATEXPO) could not attain handsome volume of spot order as the sector is lacking price competitiveness, organisers said yesterday.
"The number of foreign buyers and visitors this year were higher than last year but they offered us less price by which we cannot supply them products," Abdus Salam Murshedy, president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters' Association (BGMEA), told at the post BATEXPO press conference.
"The global economic recession and local uneven situations have sucked up our competitiveness," he said.

Dhaka to raise S Asia’s sufferings at Copenhagen meet: Hasina

Bangladesh will prominently raise the issue of sufferings of South Asian countries including Bangladesh caused by global warming in the upcoming Copenhagen Climate Change Meet.
"Bangladesh and many other South Asian countries are badly affected due to the climate change and I will raise the issue in next month's Copenhagen meet," said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina here on Sunday.
The Bangladesh Premier said this when she had an audience with former King of Bhutan Jigme Singye Wangchuk at his palace in the capital this morning on the third day of her four-day official visit to the Himalayan state of Bhutan.

Nidal taken off ventilator: Shooting raises fears for Muslims in US army

Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who went on a shooting spree at Fort Hood, has been taken off a ventilator but still remains in intensive care at a military hospital, a US Army spokesman says.
Spokesman Col. John Rossi told reporters on Saturday at Fort Hood that he is not sure if Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan is able to communicate.
Hasan, a career soldier with some 20 years experience, was shot during an exchange of gunfire during Thursday's attack. The military moved him on Friday to Brooke Medical Center in San Antonio, about 150 miles southwest of Fort Hood.

River transport workers’ strike continues as talks fail: Launch passengers suffer

Talks between river transport workers under the banner of the Bangladesh River Transport Workers Federation and the officials of the Ministry of Shipping ended without any result yesterday.
Md Abdul Mannan Hawlader, acting secretary of the ministry held talks with the delegation of the federation led by Shah Alam, vice president of the organisation at the Secretariat yesterday.
However, a meeting between the rivers transport owners and the high officials of the Ministry of Shipping is likely to be held today to resolve the crisis, sources of the concerned ministry told the New Nation.

BTSS to produce low-cost phone-mobile sets, laptops

The government has decided to produce low-cost land phone and mobile phone sets, laptop and different telephone tools and machinery in the country.
Under the imitative, Bangladesh Telephone Shilpa Sangstha (BTSS) has already floated an international tender to procure necessary technology and equipment from abroad, according to sources in the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications.
The state-run company would be the first in Bangladesh to manufacture and market cellular phones early next year and in the process reduce dependence on import in the fast growing telecom sector, a well placed official source said.

South Asian nations urged: Unite to fight Terrorism

Home Minister advocate Sahara Khatun yesterday urged the South Asian nations to unite in the fight against terrorism, which is a major development.
"The political roots of terrorism have caused great mistrust and misunderstanding among South Asian countries. Extremist influences have, at times, polarised our societies to the extent of hostility towards neighbours," she said.
The Home Minister was addressing the opening session of a three-day regional workshop for senior police officers and prosecutors in South Asia on Effectively Countering Terrorism.

BB launches trial run of ACH: Money transfer to take 2 hours instead of 2 days

Bangladesh Bank yesterday launched the trial run of newly introduced Automated Clearing House (ACH), as part of its move to digitalise the country's banking system.
Under the new automated system, banks will not need to send their cheques physically to the clearing house at the central bank for effecting fund transfer. Now the banks can do the job online from their own offices using machine readable cheques and the funds will be transferred electronically.
However, the banks can also drop their cheques at the ACH at Bangladesh Bank where the machine can take image and data of 300 cheques per minute.
