Spreading of edn to acquire knowledge underscored

Speakers at a function at Gaibandha on Thursday stressed the need for spreading education to women so that they could acquire knowledge on reproductive health and contribute to alleviating poverty to eradicate gender discrimination to have a better society.

"Collective action is necessary to remove the existing gender inequalities and ensure equal rights of women in the society". They said this at an orientation workshop on ensuring reproductive health and eradicating gender disparity organized by district information office and UNFPA at the conference room of deputy commissioner (DC) on Thursday.

DC M Shahidul Islam attended the workshop as the chief guest while Professor Atiqa Banu, Principal of Gaibandha Government Women's College, Additional District Magistrate M Mahmud Hasan, District Information Officer Sabiha Akhter Lucky, panel poura Mayor Abdul Hai, Head Mistress FM Shamsunnahar and Journalist M. Shahiduzzaman, addressed it. Terming women repression as a social nuisance, the speakers said that importance should be given to involve the women in various income generating activities to evaluate them as wage earners to check domestic violence.

They also emphasized on creating muss awareness among the people , particularly the rural ones, about the stigma like dowry and early marriage to evict those from the society side by side with changing social and personal attitudes.

About -50 participants, including teachers, imams, priests, public representatives and the journalists, took past in the workshop.
