Opinion: Honouring the promises made

Md. Nazrul Islam Khan

The factional clashes among Awami League have become widespread scenarios especially after establishment in state's powers through a gargantuan victory. Although the outcome of election was not beyond suspicion but in true sense a large number of voters voted for AL with anticipation for change. During the election campaign all candidates as well as activists of AL visited from door to doors of voters and solemnly assured them for positive changes in every phase of life.

But unfortunately, now almost all of them are engross in raising monetary funds ignoring the innocent voters. The day-to-day melees in streets among AL activists are nothing but clashes of pecuniary interests.

In developing countries where a large number of people are illiterate it is unproblematic for corrupt politicians to fraud them.

That's why the 'politicians' never dare to promise anything to people prior to election although they firmly believe in impracticality of their implementation. But regrettably people barely learn from mistake.

However, AL already proved their remoteness from own political ideology. Their political faith mostly based on the Liberation War and throughout the past election campaign they articulated for satisfying the dreams of freedom fighters as well as ensuring trial of war criminals. In fact, such approach on the part of AL convinces people especially young voters to support them.

But the activities of AL government evidently, perturbed the people. No sign of implementation of the dreams of liberation heroes still ostensible rather frustration prevails everywhere. Even trial of war criminals still remains ignored.

In fact, no wrong should go unpunished if it is capable of being remedied by court is a principle of justice. That's why trial of accused who were involved in war crimes is highly demanded for sake of justice and apparently supportable from viewpoint of law as well as morality.

It is also a principle of law that everyone shall be presumed to be innocent until his guilt is proved by a competent court of law beyond any reasonable doubt.

But a shocking tendency is apparent on the part of government to furnish the colour of war criminal to some opposition's leaders without any probe or trial.

The trial of war culprits should be the prime agenda of AL government although their acts and words are inconsistent with the target.

Today a large number of people believe in apathy of AL government in ensuring the trial and if so, AL perceptibly, used the issue during election campaign as a strapping weapon against the rivals that eventually assisted them to secure a gigantic victory.

It is not just and fair on the part of any political organisation to pledge anything or everything whatever requires satisfying people and subsequently abandoning the same.

Such illicit practices are liable for tarnishing the image of politicians as well as political parties.

However, AL holds a supreme position in the absence of strong opposition both inside and outside the Parliament. This is the high time to satisfy the people that ultimately ensure their credibility.

But instead of engrossing in public welfare nearly all of them are gripping in ousting oppositions, ensuring ascendancy as well as earning money.

In fact, most probably there exist none to thwart such illegal and immoral practices. When any political government enacts any legislation for personal security of its supreme leader and his or her family at that moment it visibly, loose moral pedestal to barricade others from securing illicit personal benefits..

The political parties utter divergent slogans at different elections but the people of Bangladesh are so unfortunate that they experienced implementation of them.
