News Briefs Genocide day observed at Panchagarh Atowary Correspondent The Purana Dighirpar Genocide Day was observed at Atowary upazila in Pnachagarh district on Thursday. On this day in 1971, troops from the then West Pakistan killed 11 villagers, dug a hole, threw their corpses thereinto and covered with sands and earth. Their offence was that they rose against the brutality of the then West Pakistani troops and lent all out support to the war of independence. They were killed after they were compelled to shoulder the dead bodies of the West Pakistani troops killed in a fierce battle with the freedom fighters. But sadly no monument in memory of them was built until June 2009. Howbeit, Mazharul Haque Prodhan, MP from Panchagarh-1, laid the foundation of a monument on June 1. Night post office demanded at Naogaon A Correspondent The people of Naogaon municipal town has been suffering for want of a night post office for long despite the fact that other means of communication has been increased in the country in the recent days. Though the head office gives valuable service to the citizens, it remains closed at night. For this, many public and private employees and the officers, the teachers, the students, the businessmen and the housewives cannot avail post office services at daytime for remaining busy in their jobs. A night post office can provide them with a good opportunity to do that work at night. The head post office too has been suffering from shortage of staffs, which hinders delivery of letters and money orders. Car collection centre opened A car collection centre was opened at Barobari Bazaar under Gacheha union in Ghazipur sadar upazila recently, says a press release. Owner Md. Sultan Rana said, "The purpose of opening the car collection centre at Barobari is to provide facilities to the well off persons of the area to buy their choices herefrom. Sometimes, journey to the capital city and the return voyage become risky, time factor, and expensive. In order to save them from such types of hazardous, this car collection centre has been established at Barobari Bazaar. Managing Director Md. Motiur Rahman was present on this occasion. Shops burnt in fire Staff reporter A devastating fire burnt several shops situated at Hossain Market, Gasbari Bazaar under Kanaighat upazila in Sylhet district on Wednesday night. The sad occurrence took place during the small hours of night. The local people claimed that the fire might originate from a shoe store, spreading quickly to a telecom shop, cloth store and to other shops. Proprietor of Al-Ehsan Telecom said, the amount of losses was primarily estimated for taka 50,000 only. A general diary was registered with the Kanaighat Police Station.
