Politicians should learn from mistakes

Md. Nazrul Islam Khan

The political turbulence is one of the major grounds behind failure of Bangladesh in divergent respects both in national and international arena. Since a few decades bitter hostilities as well as distrust has been prevailing among major political organizations and the scenarios have been getting worse in course in of time but no symptom subsist for evolution.

The people observed wretched political turmoil at the end of BNP led alliance government in October 2006. In fact, inflexible mind set on the part of major political parties led the plight under so perils. In open street people experienced aggression on rival meeting, brutal assassinations of opponent activists and even threat for shedding more blood, if required, to realize the demands. The lust for powers ostensibly prevailed over moral sense as well as human conscience.

The evil-minded power holders always seek for chance and such widespread disorder encourage and assist to serve their illicit purposes. Consequently, the Army led by General Mooen U Ahmed as well as backed by foreign conspirators usurped the state's powers in unconstitutional manner. Apparently the prime trade of the regime was to oust democracy, rule of law and justice. That's why; in gaining these illegal purposes inevitably a large quantity of politicians were detained, tortured as well as sentenced in divergent terms. In fact, politicians belonging to major political parties were the central victims of the illegal regime.

But after rebirth of democracy it is apparent that politicians learn nothing from 1/11 as otherwise the present political scenarios would be different. The government recently realizes the necessity to erase caretaker government from constitution although it was inserted on colossal demand as well as stress by major political parties led by Awami League. It may be noted that, during the period of BNP led alliance AL urged for merely reforms in CG system but with alteration of regime AL regrettably changes its voice. By utilizing gigantic majority in parliament it can do anything or everything but such whimsical attitudes shall inevitably furnish fuel to hostilities between government and oppositions that ultimately stretch violence all over the territory. The immature actions of major political parties tarnished the image of Bangladesh in international area as well as provide opportunities for overseas diplomats to surpass legitimate limits by snooping in interior issues. It is really startling that politicians very often engage in propagandas against rivals in alien territories and ask for their effectual assistances to serve own political aims. But they abandon that these foreign diplomats had played paramount roles behind the usurpation of powers by General Mooen.

It is a sacred duty of democratic government to keep oppositions in confidence but still now people experienced no such bona fide steps on the part of AL government. In recent times government initiates to withdraw some political motivated cases and it may be noted that it is authorized to do so subject to the pertinent provisions of Code of Criminal Procedure. But in practice with a few exceptions the cases withdrawn were almost against AL leaders and activists. Allegedly a huge number of fair charges had withdrawn which were filed against the ruling party's leaders. Even the government did not dare to withdraw the atrocious Palton assassination case against AL chief where at least six rival activists were heartlessly murdered in open boulevard by then opposition's activists who were gathered in Dhaka following command of Sheikh Hasina. Such wanton withdrawal of charges undoubtly must be treated as a hindrance in the way of ensuring rule of law.

However, at present the people are more mindful concerning politics as well as political government. With anticipation for change in divergent respects a large number of voters favoured AL as it promised to build a sound democratic society. But the actions of AL lead the people to apprehend that most probably the selection was erroneous.

In 1950 the then South African government decided to oust dwellers from Sofia Town, which was positioned at central point of Johannesburg. In opposing the capricious decision at a public gathering Nelson Mandela declared that they would prevent such action even if required, by sacrificing lives. A huge figure of people being encouraged became mentally prepared to sacrifice anything as asked by ANC. But later Mr. Mandela discovered that they were not in a position to engage in conflict with the government in required manner that evidently, perturbed people. The people at the moment vanished confidence upon Mandela as we as ANC. But Mr. Mandela learned a good lesson from the bitter mistake that no one should assures beyond capacities.

In Bangladesh the politicians throughout every election campaign promise for a lot of appericiatable deeds even beyond capacities. But the repetitions of failure to be entrusted with public confidence as well as implementation of good deeds never assist them to learn from mistakes.
