100pc people to get electricity by 2021

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Mohammad Enamul Huq told the parliament yesterday that the government would bring 100 per cent people of the country under electricity facility by 2021.

He said this in response to a written question of Md. Shahriar Alam (Rajshahi-6) during the question and answer hour of the parliament session.

"The government has taken various plans to ensure electricity facility to 100 per cent people of the country by 2021. Under this plan, the construction work of a 667 megawatt power station will be completed within December of the current year. The construction of a 900 megawatt power station will be completed within June 2012 and the construction of 1895 megawatt power station will be completed within June 2014," the minister said.

The government has already invited tender of 820 megawatt Peaking power station, which will start producing power from June 2011. RFP has been invited for construction of a 530 megawatt rental power station in private sector and it is expected to go into operation within August 2010.

The programme of constructing additional 970 megawatt rental power station is under process, the minister added.

Besides, the feasibility study of constructing a total of 2000-2600 megawatt coal based power station in Chittagong, Khulna, Zazira (Shariatpur) and Meghnaghat within 2014 will start soon, he further said.

"Except the above mentioned power stations, programme has been taken to construct a 300-450 megawatt combined cycle (2nd unit) at Bibiyana, a 300-450 megawatt combined cycle (2nd unit) dual fuel at Meghnaghat, 150-225 megawatt combined cycle (2nd Unit) in Bhola, 100 megawatt power station at Savar and 100 megawatt power station at Joydebpur," the minister said.
