PDB’s SOS to Petrobangla: Gas-based power plants in dire straits

Power Development Board (PDB) has sought assurance of gas supply from state-owned Petrobangla to establish three gas-fired mega power plants having capacity to produce 1,125MW of electricity by 2013.
The three gas-fired power plants will be established under new initiative of the PDB to reduce electricity crisis across the country.
"Power crisis has been intensifying gradually due to mismatch between demand and supply of electricity earlier," PDB Secretary Md Azizul Islam said in a letter to Petrobangla Chairman Prof Hossain Monsoor on November 1.

Hasina urges IUT graduates: Spread knowledge for betterment of people

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday urged the fresh graduates of the Islamic University of Technology (IUT) to spread their knowledge for betterment of the people of the world and building up a bridge among the Muslim Ummah.
The Prime Minister made the call while addressing the 23rd Convocation of the Islamic University of Technology (IUT), a subsidiary organ of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) here.
OIC Secretary General and Chancellor of the University Prof. Dr Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu presided over the convocation ceremony.

The Detective Branch (DB) of police have arrested Ataul Huda, a nephew of Bazlul Huda from his Chuadanga house yesterday morning in connection with bomb attack on Barrister Fazle Noor Taposh. MP.

Bangabandhu murder case: State counsel dismisses as ridiculous defence defined meeting

UNB, Dhaka

The chief state counsel yesterday dismissed as ridiculous and a figment of fact the defense arguments that the August 15, 1975 carnage was no case of criminal conspiracy for murder but a plot of committing mutiny to change the then Mujib government.
Narrating the background in support of his contentions Anisul Huq said from the evidence on record as well as facts and circumstances of the case it was a "clear case of criminal conspiracy for murder".
He said the conspirators, both serving and dismissed army officers, after briefing their troops at night parade in Dhaka Cantonment, simultaneously carried out three operations on the fateful night.

Govt to restore ’72 Constitution after some amendments: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday told the Jaitya Sangsad that the constitution of 1972 would be restored after bringing some amendments to it.
She said this taking floor as Speaker Abdul Hamid Advocate, at the beginning of the order of the day, reminded the lawmakers about the Constitution Day today.
The Speaker reminded the House that November 4 is the day when, in 1972, the country's Constitution was adopted by the first government of the independent Bangladesh under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Japan to relocate production base to Bangladesh

Japan considers Bangladesh a potential destination of its relocated production bases and investment under China plus-1 theory, as Japanese investors want to reduce dependence on China.
"We're too much dependent on China… Now our investors are trying to divert production bases to other countries including Bangladesh," said new Japanese Ambassador in Dhaka Tamotsu Shinotsuka at a 'Meet-the-Reporters' at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) yesterday afternoon.
Explaining the reasons for looking at Bangladesh, the envoy said Bangladesh has excellent labour forces which are cheaper than Vietnam, Thailand and China.

3 more DFID projects worth £113.13m in pipeline

Three new projects of DFID with a fund of 113.13 million pounds sterling are now in the pipeline regarding Chars Livelihoods, Business Service Markets, and Security and Justice in Bangladesh.
The visiting British Parliamentary Group, led by Malcolm Bruce, yesterday apprised Finance Minister AMA Muhith of the British-aided schemes during a one-hour meeting held at his ministry.
As planned, the projects will be implemented in 2009, 2010 and 2011. The projects are Chars Livelihoods Programme (CLP) phase-II (70 million pound) under RD&C Division, Developing Business Service Markets (DBSM-II) (11.

Call to include migrants’ health issue in migration

Speakers at a seminar here yesterday urged the government to properly incorporate the migrants' health issue in the migration and health policies.
Greater policy intervention and social awareness is needed to address migrants' health in order to enhance the productivity of Bangladeshi workers abroad, IOM Regional Representative for South Asia Rabab Fatima told the seminar.
International Organization for Migration (IOM) organised the dissemination seminar on a study, entitled 'Impact of Migration on the Health of Bangladeshi Labor Migrants: A Preliminary Study,' in collaboration with the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B).
