500 families become self-reliant by stitching Nakshi-Kantha: A significant change indeed BSS, Narsingdi About 500 families of 25 villages in Narsingdi sadar and Polash upazilas of the district achieved economic self-reliance thr-ough stitching Nakshi Kantha, a sort of popular tapestry in the country. Local sources said that the families mostly with economic hardship achieved a revolutionary change in their lives with a period of only four years by involving themselves in the jobs. Now they are leading happy life with three square meals a day and improved sanitary coverage and their children having schooling facilities. Chimishpur Dipshikha Mohila Samity (CDMS), a local non-government organization, assisted by local women affairs department launched the Nakshi Kantha project aiming to uplift of the underprivileged women in the district. The project was started with the participation of 10 destitute women of Chinishpur village in a room adjacent to the samity office. Now women from 25 villages specially widows and divorced are engaged in making Nakshi Kantha and became self -reliant economically. The project cover the rural women providing with training on Nakshi Kantha. The women are also being given training on human rights, gender equality and primary health care and nutrition. A number of harijan women were imparted training by the CDMS Nakshi Kantha project and the women are now engaged in the trade leading a happy life. Saraswati, a harijan women of Palash upazila, told BSS Correspondent that she and her two minor children become utterly helpless with the sudden demise of her husband. She then joined CDMS Nakshi Kantha project. Her monthly income is now stands at about Taka 3000.
