Education policy not against religious values

Staff Reporter

Prof Mujaffar Ahmed, president of Sushasoner Jannya Nagorik (Sujan) yesterday said that the proposed 'National Education Policy 2009' should be implemented soon after examining the opinions witch came from different quarters.

He also said that the education policy did not deny morality and religious values of the country's people. Being politically motivated, different quarters are opposing it. The proposed policy is not contrary to the Constitution. Rather it conforms to articles 8, 11, 14, 15 and 17 of the Constitution.

Prof Mujaffar made those observations in his keynote paper presented at a roundtable titled 'Consideration of Bangladesh's Education Policy' held at the National Press Club in the city.

He said that the primary level education has not been reflected properly in the policy. So this area should be reviewed, he observed.

He suggested establishing high standard research based institute of education and also establishment of education resource centres in each upazila to strengthen the primary education.

Moderated by columnist Syed Abul Maksud, the roundtable was addressed, among others, by former education minister Sheikh Shahidul Islam, lawmaker Biren Shikder, professor of Dhaka University Dr Syed Anowar Hossain, former director general of NAYEM Dr Md Anwarul Haque, former vice chancellor of Jahangirnagar University Dr Kazi Saleh Ahmed, Awami League leader Mahmudur Rahman Manna and Sujan secretary Dr Badiul Alam Majumder.

Sheikh Shahidul Islam said that the proposed education policy was not acceptable saying that the education policy had been formulated for some city dwellers. It should be revised to make it suitable for the entire nation, he added.
