Death toll rises to 3: Outsiders behind garment violence Mamunur Rashid
Persons killed and those who took part in the violent clashes on Saturday on the premises of Korean-Bangladesh joint venture Nippon Garment Factory at Ershad Nagar, Tongi, Gazipur, were not workers of the factory but outsiders, Police sources said. Three persons were killed and 200 others, including 16 policemen, injured in clashes between the so-called workers and law enforcers in Tongi. The workers said non-payment of salaries triggered the clash but the factory owners claimed that salary of one month remains outstanding which the workers were assured to be paid on November 10.  |
Low pressure of gas blamed: Production in CUFL becomes uncertain Shamim Jahangir
Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited (CUFL), which produces one-third of the total amount of urea fertilizer in the public sector, could not go into production due to low pressure of gas in the plant. The CUFL gets gas 34 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) against its requirement for 49mmcfd. The CUFL, which went into operation on October 26, failed to go into production so far and the matter has been brought to the notice of the Ministry of Industries.  |
Bangabandhu murder case: Mohiuddin’s counsel for re-investigation of case BSS, Dhaka
Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun, counsel for convict AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed (lancer), on Sunday pleaded for further investigation of the Bangabandhu Murder Case as well as re-trial under the army act while submitting his argument in the appeal hearing against the verdict of the High Court Division. "Three army personnel-Col Jamil, Captain Sheikh Jamal and Sepoy Md. Younus-and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman were assassinated in the incident on August 15,1975. The persons involved in the events should be tried under army act," he argued.  |

JMB chief escapes arrest, wife, sister-in-law held

Maulana Saidur Rahman, chief of the banned outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), escaped arrest yesterday but his wife and sister-in-law were captured by RAB. A RAB team yesterday afternoon raided on the fourth floor of a house, identified as the den of the JMB kingpin at Sabujbagh in the city, but failed to arrest him. The JMB leader, went out of the rented house where he had been living with his wife, just 20 minutes before the raid," Captain Taif, operation officer of RAB-3 that conducted the drive, told journalists.  |
Commerce Minister at CPD dialogue: Govt to help boost garment export

"The government would provide all kinds of necessary supports to boost the country's exports," he said as chief guest while speaking at a dialogue on 'In Search of New Market, New Product and Bangladesh's Apparels in Japan' organised by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) at CIRDAP auditorium in the capital.  |
US Army Pacific Commander calls on Army Chief

US Army delegation leader US Army Pacific Commander Lt General Mixon paid a courtesy call on Chief of Army Staff General Md. Abdul Mubeen at Army Headquarters, Dhaka Cantonment on Sunday. General Mixon spent some time with the Army Chief, exchanged greetings and discussed on matters of bilateral issues. During his stay in Bangladesh Lt General Mixon will pay tributes to the memory of the members of the Armed Forces martyred during the War of Liberation in 1971 placing floral wreath at the 'Shikha Anirban' at Dhaka Cantonment.  |
Steps taken to remove housing problems for poor: JS told BSS, Dhaka
State Minister for Housing and Public Works Advocate Abdul Mannan Khan told the House yesterday that the government has undertaken various steps for removing housing problems of lower and middle class people of Dhaka city. Replying to a scripted question from treasury bench member Mohammad Shahriar Alam, he said 4.55 acre lands have been allocated for the low income people in Jhilmil Housing Project and 15.53 acre lands have been allocated for constructing multistoried buildings of 600-800 square feet flats for lower and middle class people in the same project.  |
