Commentary: The most outspoken and courageous Finance Minister The sudden passing away of former Finance Minister M Saifur Rahman in a road accident on Saturday has come as a great shock to the nation. The 77-year-old chartered accountant-turned politician made his mark not merely as Bangladesh's longest serving finance minister and presenting 12 out of 36 national budgets since the liberation of the country but also for steering the economy towards steady growth, especially since the restoration of democracy in 1991. He succeeded to record a turn around of the economy in the early nineties when the share of local resources to the development budget rose to 42 per cent in 1995-96 from a mere five per cent in 1989-90. |
