Swine Flu to peak in a week

The country on Tuesday confirmed a record 34 swine flu cases overnight, while government apprehends the A (H1N1) virus would touch the peak in a week.
"We recorded the highest number of 34 swine flu cases today. And this number would grow at least for next one week with more cases detected in laboratory tests," government spokesperson Prof Dr Mahmudur Rahman told BSS.
Rahman, however, said the people should not be panicked since the swine flu was not so fatal like the bird flu, a disease where mortality rate is over 80 percent compared to only one percent in the case of swine flu.

Basic change in Nat’l Edn Policy likely: Pry edn up to Class VIII, Secondary Class XII

The National Education Policy Formulation Committee will submit Wednesday the much-awaited draft report prescribing extension of the primary education level up to class VIII and secondary to class XII, among other basic changes in the country's outworn education system.
Headed by National Professor Kabir Chowdhury, the team of experts will submit its report to the Education Minister at the ministry at 11.30 am. It was actually supposed to be submitted on August 3.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) yesterday celebrated its 31 st founding anniversary with a renewed call to materialise the dream of party founder shaheed president Ziaur Rahman.
BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia formally inaugurated the two-day celebrations by laying flowers at the grave of Ziaur Rahman.
She was accompanied by party secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain, standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed and vice-president MK Anwar, Dhaka city mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, former speaker Jamir Uddin Sircar and others party leaders and supporters.

Ex-adviser Matin sued for Tk 25 cr damages

Former shipping adviser M A Matin and ex-shipping secretary Sheikh Motahar Hossain have

been sued for Tk 25 crore damages.
Chittagong port berth operator Everest Enterprise chief Shahadat Hossain Selim filed the Tk 25 crore case on Tuesday with the First Dhaka Joint District and Sessions Court.
Motahar Hossain is currently a member of Privatisation Commission.
Judge K M Imrul Quayes issued summons against the two defendants.

BDR mutineers can’t be tried under Army Act by notification: Dr Kamal

Eminent jurist Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday submitted before the Supreme Court that the BDR mutineers could not be tried under the Army Act by issuing a gazette notification with retrospective effect to adjudicate the events of February 25-26.
Kamal Hossain, giving his opinion as one of 10 lawyers appointed as amici curiae by the Appellate Division, said "The government can make no law to try any offence already committed."
A 11-member full Appellate Division bench, headed by chief justice MM Ruhul Amin, continued hearing opinions from senior lawyers on the presidential reference for the fourth day yesterday.

Hasina arrives in Geneva

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in Geneva on Tuesday afternoon at the head of a 45-member Bangladesh delegation to attend a five-day UN-sponsored international meet on climate change.
A flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines carrying the Premier and her entourage touched down at Geneva International Airport at local time 1:10pm (Bangladesh time 6:10pm).
On her arrival at the airport to attend the World Climate Conference-3 (WCC-3), State Councilor of Geneva Canton Francois Longchamp received the Bangladesh Prime Minister.

Seek police help during tender dropping: DMP Commissioner urges govt organisation

AKM Shahidul Haq, Metropolitan Police Commissioner of Dhaka yesterday called upon government organizations to seek police help during tender submission to avert any unpleasant incident over tender dropping, as reports are rife about muscling out general contractors.
"If necessary, they can set up tender-dropping box at the nearest police station or Police Commissioner's Office," he said while briefing reporters about detection of the Juba League leader Liton killing case at the Detective Branch office in Minto Road.
