AL council July 24, Jalil sidelined: Reformists in danger Pulack Ghatack
Political career of some top-level Awami League (AL) leaders is at stake as many of them might be dropped from the party presidium in the upcoming council to be held on July 24. General Secretary Abdul Jalil has already been sidelined from every task of the party and the council is also being organised bypassing him. Even invitation letters for the party council have been printed in the name of AL joint secretary cum spokesman Syed Ashraful Islam bypassing Jalil. The indication is clear that Jalil is seen as a spent force and he may not be given any post worth name in the newly organised AL, according to party insiders.  |
Kalam for 'borderless’ ties in education

Visiting former Indian President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam yesterday expressed his hope that India and Bangladesh would work together to become partners in the development of complex ICT products by devising interconnecting mechanisms. "When I see all of them (people of various countries) working together like one family without any barrier of the culture from which they came or the language that they speak, I will not be surprised if India and Bangladesh become partners in the development of complex ICT products," he said.  |

Commerce Minister Lt Col (Retd) Faruq Khan yesterday said the mistrust and political unwillingness are the main reasons for not flourishing trade and businesses in South Asian countries. "Consensus among political leaders in the region could help boost trade and businesses and resolve long standing issues," he said while speaking as chief guest at a conference on 'Bangladesh- India Economic Relations' participated by businessmen from the two countries at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the city.  |
PM asks for keeping prices within purchasing limit: Directs TCB to import essentials before Ramzan Staff Reporter
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday directed the ministries concerned to take necessary measures to keep prices of essential commodities within the purchasing power of the mass people and check their sufferings including traffic congestion during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan. The Prime Minister gave the direction while presiding over the weekly cabinet meeting held at Bangladesh Secretariat. Briefing journalists Prime Minister's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said the Prime Minister asked the authorities concerned to import essential items through TCB (Trading Corporation of Bangladesh) and ensure their quick marketing.  |
Low over Bay intensifies into monsoon depression: Low-lying coastal areas may be inundated

Influenced by a monsoon depression formed over the northwest Bay, low-lying areas of most coastal districts of the country are likely to be inundated by wind-driven surge of height 03-05 feet above normal astronomical tide during tonight, Met office warned. "Under the influence of depression the low-lying areas of the coastal districts of Cox's Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Feni, Laxmipur, Bhola, Barisal, Patuakhali, Barguna, Chandpur, Pirojpur, Jhalakati, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore inlands and chars are likely to be inundated by wind-driven surge of height 03-05 feet above normal astronomical tide at places over the coast during 9pm-2am tonight," said a Met office special bulletin yesterday afternoon.  |
2 dailies pursued minus- 2 formula: Salman UNB, Dhaka
Beximco Group vice chairman Salman F Rahman yesterday accused the country's two leading dailies of launching a campaign for "minus one formula" after their drive for "minus two formula" failed during the military-backed interim government. Salman, also the private sector adviser to Sheikh Hasina, said the Prime Minister had been the target of the campaign by the architects of the minus-two theory-Prothom Alo and The Daily Star-during the interim government.  |

The Daily Star and the Prothom Alo dismissed outright Beximco Group Vice-chairman Salman F Rahman's accusation that the two dailies were the architects of the 'Minus Two' theory during the political purge launched by the past military-backed regime. "We categorically deny it and consider it as his desperate attempt to divert public attention from the doings of his own companies," said a joint statement issued by Daily Start Editor Mahfuz Anam and Abdul Quayum, Joint Editor of Prothom Alo, on behalf of Editor Matiur Rahman.  |
Hena Das passes away
UNB, Dhaka
Comrade Hena Das, a legendary leader of feminist movement and central committee member of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), died yesterday at the age of 85. Hena Das, who had long been suffering from various old age complications, breathed her last at about 11:35am at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital. Earlier Saturday, she was admitted to Labaid Hospital after she fell sick and shifted to the BSMMU Sunday as her condition deteriorated fast. Hena Das, also a prominent teacher, left behind two daughters, a host of relatives and well wishers to mourn her death.  |
41pc U-5 children suffer from malnutrition

Country's more than 40 percent children aged under five years and one-third of mothers suffer from malnutrition, a nutrition specialist of International Centre for Diarrhoeal Diseases Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) said here on Monday. Describing the country's nutrition status at a seminar on mainstreaming nutrition, Head of Nutrition Programme of the ICDDR,B Dr Tahmeed Ahmed said the child and mother malnutrition rates are much lower than the expected target compared to many South Asian countries.  |
