Bangladeshi workers stranded in UAE

More than 100 labourers from Bangladesh, India and Nepal have been stranded in their camps for about six months without pay and are living on charity of respective social and cultural groups, UAE's The National newspaper reported.
The camps are on the outskirts of Mohammed bin Zayed City. Groups such as the Kerala Social Centre and Shakti Theatre have been caring for the workers but officials from the Indian Embassy intervened recently when the task of feeding the labourers every day became difficult for the organisations.

Sircar pleads innocence

Former Speaker Jamir Uddin Sircar said under Article 66 the parliament membership can be cancelled only on ground of bankruptcy ,mental derailment, conviction in a court and in case of taking foreign citizenship or crossing the floor. He said another reason of losing membership can be on ground of 90 days consecutive absence from the parliament session.
The privileges and facilities which he enjoyed, were inherited from his predecessors Abdul Hamid and Humayun Rashid Chowdhury. He has handed over those to his successor advocate Abdul Hamid.

Govt firm to save Buriganga river

State Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Advocate Quamrul Islam yesterday said that government is committed to save the years old Buriganga.
He said this at a rally on board boats to save the Buriganga, organised jointly by Dhaka Nagorik and Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon (BAPA).
The government, he said, would if required amend the existing law to protect the river from pollution. Vice President of BAPA Prof Abdullah Abu Sayed said that though different organisations have been talking of recovery of the Buriganga, there is no effective initiative for it so far.

Jamuna Bridge at risk as river swells

The Director General of the Water Development Board Md Abul Kalam Azad warned on Saturday the Jamuna Bridge was also under threat from the heavily rain-fed river.
Visiting the site of the breached section of the flood barrier, he said, "The current and characteristics of the Jamuna river are quite unpredictable."
"A 'hundred-year guaranteed' embankment has been breached at one of its strongest points," said Azad.
"The guide embankment of the Jamuna Bridge is also under threat. The west bank of the bridge is at great risk.

Lighter vessel sinks near outer anchorage of Ctg port

Chittagong Bureau

An inland water vessel carrying gypsum reportedly turned turtle after colliding a dredging barge and capsized in the bay near the outer anchorage of Chittagong maritime port yesterday morning.
According to the radio control of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) the bulk vessel MV Modern met the accident while it had been crossing the Alpha anchorage at about 9:10 in the morning.
The vessel went out of control reportedly because of the high tide and collided a dredging barge of Chittagong Port Authority-Khnak.

Fertile couples to get birth control materials

Health and Family Welfare Minister AFM Ruhul Haque yesterday said that the birth control materials would be made available to the fertile couples across the country for containing population boom.
About 17.6 percent couple of the country have no access to birth control pills and other methods, he said while inaugurating a programme on the eve of the World Population Day at the Osmani Auditorium.
The title of this year's World Population Day is "Responding to the economic crisis: Investing in women is a smart choice". He pointed out that of the total 55.

50 injured in students-locals clashes Bhasani Varsity closed sine die

UNB, Tangail

Maulana Bhasani Science and Technology University at Santosh was Saturday closed sine die following widespread clashes between students and businessmen and local people that left over 50 people wounded, including 10 policemen.
Witnesses said a chase and counter-chase between students of the varsity and the locals and businessmen of nearby Santosh Bazaar took place on the campus and on its outskirts as a group of students went to the bazaar following altercation between some students and businessmen in the morning.

Newsman Sarwar Jahan dead

Senior journalist and freedom fighter Sarwar Jahan (62) passed away at city's Lab Aid Hospital in the early hours of Saturday.
After a heart attack, he got admitted to Lab Aid Hospital on July 2.
He left behind wife, three daughters and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn the death.
Late Sarwar was the News Consultant of The Financial Express (FE). He served as war correspondent of 'Joy Bangla' during the liberation war in 1971.
He served in various capacities in Dainik Desh, New Nation and other dailies before joining the Financial Express on August 11, 1997.

Commentary: Corruption allegations are not for consideration of politicians as members of Sangsad

The one-sided version of the parliamentary probe body was being made public and being challenged. But the detailed allegation are to be kept secret till the completion of the probe. And even after completion of reports, these should have been kept for the decision of the Speaker. There is disagreement whether reports of the parliamentary committees could be disclosed by the committees.
A parliamentary committee conducts internal enquiries and it is for the Speaker to decide whether or not the reports should be placed before the whole parliament.
