Hasina asks authorities: Fill up 6,000 vacant posts of physicians soon BSS, Dhaka
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday directed the authorities concerned to take immediate step to recruit physicians against 6,000 vacant posts for reaching medicare facilities to the doorsteps of people as committed by the government. "If necessary, recruit the new physicians on adhoc basis first and then complete formalities of the Public Service Commission (PSC) as our main objective is to reach health service to the people soon," she said.  |
Embankment breach puts Sirajganj town at risk

The rain-fed Jamuna pushing heavily against its banks started eating into the Sirajganj town protection embankment on Friday morning, sending chill down the spine of the townspeople. At around 10am, about 600 feet along the 'hard point' zone of the embankment in Shashan Goila Ghat area was found thinning away at an alarming rate. The location of the breach is only two kilometres away from the district township, the bdnews24.com correspondent said.  |
Gulshan Lake grabbing going on unabated

Nearly 40 percent of the lake at the posh Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara residential areas has been grabbed by some influential people over the years defacing the panoramic view of the area and degrading environment. Though Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkha (RAJUK) is supposed to preserve the lake and protect it from encroachers, it miserably failed to do it on different lame excuses, according to residents of these satellite towns. The RAJUK is a silent spectator to the incidence of lake grabbing for some obvious reasons, they noted.  |
Industrial police to start with 4 units initially BSS, Dhaka
The proposed Industrial Police Force is to start initially with four units in Dhaka and suburban industrial areas and southeastern Port City of Chittagong in the form of a range, officials said here on Friday. "The Industrial Police Force' will ensure security of the industrial belts all over the country but initially the specialised law enforcement agency would be launched with four units would," Home Ministry joint secretary Iqbal Khan Chowdhury told BSS. He said the range's headquarters would be based in Dhaka while the four units would be set up at Savar-Ashulia, Narayanganj, Gazipur and Port City Chittagong.  |
BAPA demands stoppage of Tipaimukh Dam

Bangladesh Paribesh Andolan (BAPA), an environmental NGO, yesterday formed a human chain demanding immediate abandoning of immediate ending of the Tipaimukh Dam Project in front of the National Museum at Shahbag in the city. Prof Abdullah Abu Sayeed, Vice President of BAPA, Dr. Abdul Matin, General Secretary, ATM Kamal, Chief Coordinator of environmental NGO Nirvik, Engr Taksim, Ruhit Hossain Prince, Dr. Nuruddin, Dr Md Abdul Hye and Hafizur Rahman, among others, participated in the human chain programme.  |
Nuclear power plant: Deal with Russia to be signed this month UNB, Dhaka
The move towards installing a nuclear power plant has gone one step forward as the Russian government has invited Bangladesh to send a delegation to visit its nuclear-power projects and sign deals. "We have received an invitation recently from the Russian government to visit its different projects. They proposed the visit to be made at the end of the current month (July)," a top official of the Science and Information Communication Technology (ICT) Ministry told UNB. According to the official, in response to the Russian offer, Bangladesh government is now taking preparation to send the team.  |
