JS panel submits report: Stripping Sircar of JS membership suggested: Probe body formed with an ulterior motive: Former Speaker

An All Party Parliamentary Probe Committee yesterday recommended stripping former Speaker Barrister Md Jamiruddin Sircar of his membership of parliament for massive corruption, irregularities and misuse of power during his tenure.
The committee also recommended legal action against him, his Deputy Akhter Hamid Siddiqui and former chief whip Khondokar Delwar Hossain on the same ground.
The probe body in its 784-page full-fledged report, suggested to recover total Taka 2.39 crore from the trio, as the amount was amassed by them illegally.

Hasina urges Khaleda to return to JS as crisis brings emergency

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday urged the absentee opposition MPs to return to parliament and make it effective in greater interest of the nation and democracy remembering the two years of emergency rule following the past crisis.
"Our only aim is to ensure that the country is never ever placed under unconstitutional and undemocratic rule," she said, adding that development of the country is not possible without democracy.
The Leader of the House made the remarks during her valedictory speech before the parliament was prorogued yesterday night at the end of the budget session.

Grabbing of house Moudud reject Matia’s allegation

BNP leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed rejected Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury’s allegation of grabbing a house in Gulshan through hoaxing and urged her for withdrawing her statement published in Thursday’s newspapers.
Barrister Moudud at a press briefing at his Motijheel chamber yesterday said the allegation of Agriculture Minister was not true. It was politically motivated only to malign him.
Moudud said the house where they have been living for 27 years is owned by his brother Manjur Ahmed.

GM crops created to grow in saline water

Scientists have formulated a way of producing genetically modifying cereal crops with growing capacity in salty water of countries where rising sea levels caused by climate change are threatening some of the most productive land in the world.
Countries including Bangladesh, Vietnam and Burma could be benefited from the new type of crops. Pakistan also can be benefited from the creation whose agriculture is also heavily dependent on the Indus River, which is becoming increasingly salty.
The invention will help alleviate hunger to the poorest nations, which are also victim of dual policies of rich countries.
