Gambling at Boalmari ghat under Pirganj upazila in Rangpur district never stops. The law and order situation in the area has collapsed as the gambling continued over the years.

Locals said gambling continues round the clock on the market days of Tukuria Bazzar on every Saturdays and Wednesdays. The gambling starts in the afternoon but continues unending till the morning of next day.

As a result, the criminals of different areas assemble there in the gambling and go back at the dead of night. As a result, the criminal activities in the area like stealing, snatching, cattle lifting are on the rise.

During the last one week, at least 18 cattles were lifted by the criminals, but no cases were filed with police.

Many of the criminals are engaging in such criminal activities for collecting money for gamblings. Especially, the youths are being involved in smuggling of the banned Indian phensidyl cough syrup, which is being used as drug by boozers. During the last six months, 23 cases of phensidyl were filed with police camp at Bhendabari under Pirganj.

The peddlers of the drug smuggle thousands of bottles of Phensidyl everyday in different places of Rangpur district and other parts of the country. They smuggle in the contraband item from India through different point of border. Tukuria Union Parishad chairman said the Boalmari, Shalpara, Shalikadah and Joyantipur Ghats have turned to the safe heaven of Phensidyl, but police is not active in this regard.

Headmaster of Harina High School said the youth force of the area is being ruined following gambling and phensidyl. Police officer of Pirganj said since Pirganj was a bordering police station, most of the it becomes impossible to conduct any raid.
