A mentally ill mother allegedly committed suicide after chopping her two children at Shibrampur in the town on Friday midnight.

Police said Tahera Begum, 40, went to her parents' house at Shibrampur along with her children Antar, 11, and Poppy, 7, three days back.

Tahera suddenly woke up from slumber at about 12am on Saturday and hacked Antar and Poppy, sleeping beside her, with a sharp weapon and ran away from the house.

Hearing screams, local people rescued the children and sent them to Sadar hospital.

Later, the body of Tahera was found hanging from a tree in a garden adjacent to the house on early Saturday.

Victim's husband Ful Miah said Tahera was mentally ill for the last three years. A case was filed.
