Lifetime SSF security for Bangabandhu family

The cabinet yesterday approved in principle the 'Father of the Nation's Family Members Security Act 2009 providing lifetime security for family members of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with immediate effect.
The approval was given at a regular weekly meeting of the cabinet at Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, eldest daughter of the slain leader Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in the chair.
"Under the law, each of the family members of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will get well-secured accommodation facilities and other security measures and services," Prime Minister's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said briefing journalists after the meeting.

7 students hurt in roof-plaster collapse

Seven students were injured yesterday as a chunk of roof-plaster fell on them when they were in a class at a school at Prasanna Poddar Lane in the city's Tantibazar area under Old Dhaka.
The injured were identified as Mhethelia(6), Rubina(7), Soniya(8) Ashamoni,(7) Tania(7) Johohara(7) and Juli(6),
Salauddin officer in-charge of Kotwali police station told the New Nation that a big chunk of plaster fell on the students of Prasanna Poddar Government Primary School when class was going on in the room at about 9:30am.

Fans await Jackson memorial: Tears turn to sweets for receiving tickets

Details of Michael Jackson's public memorial remained under wraps on Sunday as Los Angeles police braced for a huge crowd of fans expected to turn out and again warned those without tickets to stay away.
About 1.6 million people registered to be one of 17,500 people inside the memorial at the Staples Center sports arena in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday or to watch it on large video screens at a nearby theater.
Fans who won tickets were to be told by e-mail on Sunday. The company sponsoring the event will pick 8,750 names from a list of online lottery entrants each winner will receive two tickets.

56th anniversary of RU observed

The Rajshahi University (RU) steps in 56th years with a glorious past as it celebrated its 56th founding anniversary with a day-long programme on Monday.
The programme began with the hoisting of the national flag and the university flag at 6:00am at the administrative building and other buildings.
RU Vice-Chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan inaugurated the 'founding anniversary' programme by releasing pigeons and balloons.
University teachers, students, officers, employees and different political and cultural organizations placed floral wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar, RU mass grave and Shaheed Shamsuzoha grave separately.

140 killed in Xinjiang ethnic unrest

China said at least 140 people were killed in rioting by Muslim Uighurs in its restive Xinjiang region in the deadliest ethnic unrest reported in the country for decades.
The violence in the regional capital Urumqi on Sunday involved thousands of people, and the official Xinhua news agency said the death toll was likely to rise.
More than 800 other people were injured in the rampage, it added.
"Death toll in Xinjiang riot rises to 140, still climbing," Xinhua reported in its latest dispatch, after initially saying only three had died.

Obama, Medvedev agree to pursue nuclear reduction: US can use Russian land to transport arms into Afghanistan

President Barack Obama said he and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev are countering "a sense of drift" in relations between their nations with preliminary agreement Monday to reduce the world's two largest nuclear stockpiles to as few as 1,500 warheads each.
"We must lead by example, and that's what we are doing here today," Obama said as he and his Russian host pointed their arsenals toward the lowest levels of any U.S.-Russia arms control agreement.
"We resolve to reset U.S.-Russian relations so that we can cooperate more effectively in areas of common interest," Obama said.

Commentary: Trust must be kept and historic role boldly defended
Some advisers of the immediate past caretaker government face an embarrassing task in defending not only the 1/11 changes of 2007, but also themselves against personal vilification.
Gen Moeen, former chief of the army staff, wrote a book which narrated the events and his leadership role leading to the declaration of emergency on 1/11 and the formation of the caretaker government with Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed as the Chief Adviser. Gen Moeen U Ahmed's bold move was nationally and internally lauded. The emergency government was for all practical purposes formed by and run with the help and active involvement of the defence forces.
