Dhaka seeks Egmont membership to bring siphoned money back Staff Reporter
Bangladesh has applied to Egmont Group, a coordinating company of over 100 Financial Intelligence Units across the globe, for its membership as part of its effort to bring back money siphoned off from the country. This was disclosed by Minister for Finance AMA Muhith replying to a question during the Question-Answer session in Parliament yesterday. "It will be easier to gather information on siphoned off money once we get the membership of Egmont Group," he told the House replying to a question of Mahmud-us-Samad Chowdhury of Awami League.  |
JS body completes Sircar probe

The parliamentary probe body looking into corruption charges against former speaker Jamiruddin Sircar, and other top officials of the eighth parliament, completed its report on Sunday after more than three months of investigations. "We have finalised the report, but we will not make it public before submitting it to the House," Fazle Rabbi Mian, head of the probe committee, told bdnews24.com Sunday after a meeting at parliament building.  |
2,196 cos default Tk 15,480cr loan: Beximco top defaulter

Beximco Group of Companies is the top loan defaulter in the country with nearly Tk 1,000 crore bad loans against its different sister concerns. Finance Minister Abul Mal Abdul Muhith revealed it in the Jatiya Sangsad yesterday saying there are 2196 enterprises and individuals who have overdue loans of more than Tk one crore each with various commercial banks. The big defaulters collectively owe Tk 15,451 crore bad loans, he said in the Parliament replying to a question from Begum Noor Afroz Ali MP. Beximco Textile is the largest defaulter with around Tk 353.  |
Geetiara, 5 others granted bail

Former Adviser to the last Caretaker Government Geetiara Shafiya Chowdhury and five others surrendered to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka yesterday, while the court granted them bail in a case filed in connection with keeping a building in their possession forcibly. Magistrate Munshi Abdul Majid allowed the bail on a bond of Taka fifty thousand, by a lawyer and a local man. On Friday, her husband Nazim Kamran Chowdhury, his brother and son-in-law were released on bail.  |
Sani's mother seeks help to trace her missing son

'I just want to know what has happened to my son' adding 'could anybody come forward to help me in tracing my son?' Jebunnesa, mother of a BUET student Sani who went missing in Nepal last year, has been repeatedly asking this to all relevant people to help trace her son for the last one year. But the grief stricken mother could not get any clue from any one whether her son is alive or not. Despite the Prime Minister's assurance, no body in law enforcing agencies could come forward to help her in this regard, said she.  |

PM asks PGRmen: Discharge duties keeping confidence in leaderships

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday directed the members of President Guard Regiment (PGR) to discharge their duties entrusted with proficiency keeping full confidence and loyalty to their leaderships. "I firmly believe that it is possible to complete any work efficiently and in disciplined manner by maintaining loyalty and respect to commanders at all levels. Effective command channels could play vital role to complete any work in the army," she said. The Prime Minister said this while addressing a function of the PGR at Shaheed Captain Hafiz Hall at PGR headquarters in Dhaka Cantonment marking its 34 founding anniversary.  |
Bankers asked to refrain from capital market manipulation: BB Governor for intensifying monitoring to foil any conspiracy UNB, Dhaka
Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman on Sunday cautioned the commercial banks against any bid to manipulate the country's capital market through unfair means. "We're strictly monitoring the situation," he said and directed his colleagues in the central bank to intensify monitoring to foil any conspiracy at destabilizing the market. The Bangladesh Bank Governor was addressing the inaugural session of a training course of fresh recruits of the central bank at Bangladesh Bank Training Academy. The Governor's warning came amid a bullish trend in the share market.  |
