People’s cooperation needed to ensure proper education
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid was present as the chief guest at a Seminar on 'Dhaka University, the Oxford of the East: Past and Present' at Senate Bhaban of the University on Saturday. NN photo DU Correspondent Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said that to ensure proper education for all; people from every section of the society should extend support to the government's initiatives. "We have no enough capacity as the developed countries have. So we have to work collectively to achieve cherished goal," said the minister while addressing a seminar on "Dhaka University, the Oxford of the East: Past and Present" as chief guest at the Nowab Nowab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building of the Dhaka University yesterday. He urged the students of the Dhaka University to work with vigour for recovering the past glory of the university. Education Minister showed his concern about severe dropping out of students under intermediate level, especially in primary level. He said, "I have observed the recently published SSC result and found that 42 per cent students dropped out from class eight last year." He also said, to stop this wastage the government has taken prescribed decision of providing books without cost at the secondary level from next year. Dhaka University Alumni Association (DUAA) organised the seminar, which was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor of the university Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique at 10 am. DUAA general secretary Rakib Uddin Ahmed presented the keynote paper at the seminar while senior vice president of the organisation AFM Shahed Ali was in the chair. Former vice chancellors of Dhaka University Prof Dr Maniruzzaman Mia and Prof SMA Faiz, former minister Eng. LK Siddiquee, former VPs of DUCSU ASM Abdur Rab and Mahfuza Khanam, former IGP Abdul Khalek, president of Dhaka Univesity Teachers Association Prof Khandaker Bozlul Haque among others were present at the function. They all emphasised on quality education to make the dream of digital Bangladesh come true by 2021.
