Swimmer Mahfuz moves into semifinal of 50-meter freestyle



UNB, Dhaka

Bangladeshi swimmer Mahfuzur Rahman moved into the semifinal of the men's 50-meter freestyle in the First Asian Youth Games held at the Singapore Sports School Saturday.

BKSP swimmer Mahfuz, who took 25.31 seconds to cover the distance in heat, is due to compete in the event's semis Saturday at 7:04 pm (local time).

Mahfuz also took part in the 200-meter freestyle Friday night and finished last clocking 2:03.65 minutes.

Another Bangladesh swimmer Anik Islam, also from BKSP, narrowly failed to reach the semifinal of the 50-meter butterfly and was placed 5th clocking 27.32 seconds in heat at the same venue Saturday. But he finished last among the eight swimmers in the 100-meter butterfly with a timing of 1:01.10 minutes.

In shooting competition, both the Bangladeshi participants -Shovon Chowdhury and Mahmudul Hasan - made their early exist in the qualifying round of the men's 10-meter Air Rifles at the Safra Yishun Shooting Range Saturday.

In the FIBA 3 on 3 basketball competition, Bangladesh conceded another humiliating 4-33 points defeat against Palestine.

Earlier, Bangladesh suffered 6-33 points defeat against United Arab Emirates (UAE), conceded 4-33 points defeat against Thailand after getting walkover against Malaysia in the inaugural match at the Anglican High School in Singapore.

Bangladeshi shooter Syeda Sadia Sultana of BKSP finished 7th in the 10-meter Air Rifles scoring 392 Wednesday while another Bangladeshi shooter Tripu Dutta eliminated in the qualifying round on the same day.

Earlier Tuesday, both the Bangladeshi male and female athletes Mesbah Ahmed and Shirin Akhter quit from the heats of their respective 100-meter sprint.

Meanwhile, BOA President General (retd) Moeen U Ahmed and General Secretary Kutubuddin Ahmed returns home today (Sunday).

They took part in the general congress of Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) during First Asian Youth Games in Singapore Saturday morning.
