Two government Ministers appear to be in a debate on the role of the Indian High Commissioner in Bangladesh Pinak Ranjan Chakrabarty. Foreign Minister Dr. Dipu Moni's contention is that the HC's comments on Bangladesh's water experts look like breaching diplomatic norms. Syed Ashraful Islam, Minister for Local Government, on the other hand, is of the view that the seasoned diplomat of a friendly neighbouring country has only expressed his opinion on certain issues, and has not broken diplomatic norms.  |

The recent labour unrest in the readymade garments industry is alleged to be the scheme of some trade union leaders backed by the vested quarters and left-leaning organisations, informed and concerned sources maintain. The deprived jhut (wastage) businessmen also were allegedly behind the scene who were patronised by the ruling party leaders, sources further hold views. The three-day-long massacre by the garment workers and outsiders has cost nearly Tk 300 crore to the apparel industry alongside to creating image crisis in these days of global recession when the sector was passing tough time.  |
FM tells NRB confce: Missions to be asked for reports on middlemen BSS, Dhaka
Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni on Friday said Bangladeshi envoys in missions abroad would be asked to submit reports on how to check the so-called 'god fathers' to lessen the sufferings of the migrant workers. The Foreign Minister described the intermediaries as the major hurdle to increase remittance and said their interference in managing overseas jobs is not only in Bangladesh but also in receiving countries. Dr Moni held the fraudulent dealings of the intermediaries responsible for rising migration costs.  |
PM may see Modasser not overstep his jurisdiction Staff Reporter Health Adviser to the Prime Minister Prof Dr Modasser Ali alleged that poison was mixed with the food served to Sheikh Hasina while imprisoned in a sub-jail during the immediate-past caretaker government. “When she (PM) was in prison, I had several times tried to collect her blood sample for diagnosis, but they (Govt) barred me from doing so,” he told reporters after attending a programme on the National Birth Registration Day 2009 at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city.  |
Communication Minister says: Plan to join Asian Highway won’t obligate to give transit to India BSS, Dhaka
Communication Minister Syed Abul Hossain on Friday said Bangladesh's plan to join the proposed Asian Highway in UNESCAP prescribed routes would not obligate the country to offer transit facilities to India as campaigned by the opposition. "Our plan to join the network (under ESCAP prescribed routes) will not force us to offer transit or corridor facilities to any country under clause 1.5 of Asia Highway Agreement," he told BSS in an exclusive interview. "We decided to be a party to the Asian Highway Agreement for enhancing regional and international cooperation, not to give special facility to any country.  |
Strict compliance of laws can protect environment BSS, Dhaka
Speakers at a discussion here on Friday said that strict compliance of existing laws can protect environment and halt atmospheric degradations. "Though there are laws in the country against cutting of hills, felling of trees and encroachment of river banks and water bodies, but in absence of proper execution of those laws environmental degradation could not be stopped," they said. Besides, they said climate change has become a global issue and a global cry and, as such it should be arrested through international efforts.  |
