Local govt leaders meet: Amend Upazila Act or face movement

Members of Parliament (MPs) yesterday denounced the Local Government Act terming it as not in conformity with the country's constitution.
They said this addressing a discussion meeting "National Budget and the Local Government" organised by Bangladesh Upazila Chairman and Vice Chairman Forum at the National Press Club.

Tipaimukh Dam issue: Pinak’s remark about experts exceeds limit: FM

Foreign Minister Dr Tipu Moni yesterday said bilateral ties with India are important but Bangladesh will do whatever necessary to protect her interest by keeping national interest above all else.
"It's not the question of hate or love-the crucial thing is national interest," she said responding to a question about India's Tipaimukh dam at a regular press briefing at the Foreign Ministry.
Dipu Moni considered beyond diplomatic norms Indian High Commissioner Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty's recent remarks about Bangladeshi water experts and environmentalists over the Tipaimukh conundrum.

DU Day observed amid festivities

With the slogan "Higher education for bringing democracy," jubilant celebrations and fanfare by the students and teachers yesterday marked the Dhaka University Day, the 88th founding anniversary of the country's leading university.
Vice Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique formally inaugurated the day-long festival by airing balloons and cutting a ceremonial cake in the morning.
Teachers, present and former students of DU were present on the occasion.
The day's programmes included a discussion at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) auditorium followed by a festive procession that paraded the campus streets.

Home Ministry seems to be traumatised after fall of Home Minister Shahara Khatun at her Minto Road residence on Monday. She is reported to have sustained serious waist injury and awaits treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.
She underwent initial treatment at a city clinic under her colleague Dr Ruhul Haque, who is also a cabinet minister.
The Home Minister's sudden illness came at a time when the labour-intensive garment factories were in tatters at Ashulia and some of them were set ablaze.

DST reduces loadshedding, claims minister

State Minister for Power and Energy Advocate Shamsul Hoque Tuku yesterday said that the loadshedding has reduced significantly after the introduction of the daylight saving time (DST).
There had been five to six bouts of loadshedding a day in Dhaka city before the introduction of BST. It now occurs three to four times a day, he told reporters after a meeting with the Bangladesh Grey and Finished Fabrics Mills and Exporters Association (BGFFMEA) leaders at the Secretariat. Responding to a question, he said the people of the country would realise the benefits of the BST if the clock is turned back again by an hour.

UN probe into slaying of Benazir begins

The United Nations formally began a six-month investigation Wednesday into the slaying of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, a process that the government hopes will lead to her killers being brought to justice.
The three-member U.N. commission is being led by Chile's U.N. Ambassador Heraldo Munoz, a dissident during the dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet. It began its work on Wednesday, said U.N. spokeswoman in Pakistan Ishrat Rizvi.

Supply of textbooks to be ensured by Jan next

BSS, Dhaka

The National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) takes all preparations for printing 21 crore textbooks for distribution of those among the students from the primary level to the secondary level free of cost within the first week of January 2010.
An NCTB source said on Wednesday the government has provided their organisation with Taka 300 crore for carrying out this huge task for supplying the textbooks among millions of students.
The government has decided to provide the textbooks free of cost for the secondary level students from Class-VI to Class-IX to avoid any artificial crisis of the textbooks.
