Commentary: Reduction of newsprint import duty is not relief enough Slashing of import duty on newsprint from proposed five per cent to three per cent, as provided for in the budget for 2009-10 is expected to give a little relief to newspapers using imported newsprint. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her winding up speech on the budget on Monday had offered suggestion in this regard. Industry leaders however, were asking for waiver of the new duty plus withdrawal of five percent regulatory duty that used to be realised from imported newsprint before. Thus total import duty on newsprint would come to eight per cent in place of proposed 10 per cent. |
