Sequel to killing of 2 workers: RMG unit set on fire

Hundreds of angry apparel workers set ablaze a 10-storey building of Hameem Group yesterday in protest against at the death of two of their co-workers in Ansar and police firing over the past two days at Ashulia in Savar.
The two garment workers were killed in firing by Ansar and police and about 200 others injured on Saturday and Sunday during demonstration for wage hike.
All machineries and other materials on the ground and the first floors of the 10-storey building that housed a sweater factory were badly burnt.

PM proposes reduction of taxes on certain items

Prime Minister and leader of the House Sheikh Hasina yesterday requested the finance minister to reduce the proposed rates of taxes on certain items in the budget which are used by the poor and middle income people.
At the same time, she proposed increased taxes on luxury items which are used by wealthy people. Hasina, however, argued in favour of continuation of the provision for whitening black money as a ploy to tap investment of undisclosed income of a section of people.

Bomb scare halts trading at DSE

A bomb threat forced the Dhaka Stock Exchange authority yesterday to stop trade an hour earlier than the scheduled time.
An anonymous caller made the bomb threat at about 11:15am over phone saying that the building will be blown off by 2pm.Upon receiving the call the DSE authority informed it to law enforcing agencies and halted transactions at 1:15pm to evacuate the building.
However, law enforcers could not find out any bomb or explosive from the DSE building and Annex building. A DSE statement released by the authority said that no explosives or bombs had been found on the stock exchange premises.

DU Senate okays budget amid walkout by JOP

Dhaka University (DU) on Monday announced its budget of Tk 1.84 billion for the fiscal 2009-10 showing a deficit of Tk 100 million with an allocation of only 11 per cent of the total amount for education and research sectors.
DU Treasurer Mizanur Rahman presented the budget in detail at the university's annual Senate session with Vice-Chancellor and senate Chairman AAMS Arefin Siddique in the chair. The University Grants Commission (UGC) will provide Tk 1.54 billion of the total budget and Tk 200 million will come from the university's own earnings.

Politicians should shun path of confrontational politics: Inoue

Outgoing Japanese ambassador to Bangladesh Masayuki Inoue yesterday said end of confrontational politics in Bangladesh depends on wisdom of the political leadership of the country.
In an interview with The New Nation a couple of days prior to his departure, he said all issues should be resolved through discussion and dialogue among leaders of major political parties shunning the path of conflicts. Japan, he said does not believe in interference in internal matters of any country and during his stay in Bangladesh he sincerely worked towards promotion of relations between Tokyo and Dhaka.

City Mayor announces Tk 1411.58 cr budget

Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) yesterday announced a budget of Tk 1411.58 crore for the fiscal 2009-2010.
The Mayor also announced a revised budget of Tk 817.22 crore for the fiscal 2008-2009 which is lower by Taka 112.19 crore from the proposed budget of Taka 1009.41 crore.
The Mayor announced the current budget and the revision of the last year's budget at a general meeting of the city corporation at Mahanagar Natya Mancha in presence of ward councillors, officials and journalists.

Khaleda writes to Hasina: BNP names 6-member team to visit Tipaimukh

BNP chairperson and leader of the opposition Begum Khaleda Zia yesterday sent a letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with names of a six -member team including party representatives and technical experts to visit Tipaimukh dam site in India.
Nazrul Islam Khan, joint secretary general of BNP led a three- member delegation to the Prime Minister's Office. He handed over the letter to the prime minister's assignment officer Manoj Kanti Boral and protocal officer Proloi Kumar Joardar.

Ministries yet to receive any guideline on PPP projects

UNB, Dhaka

No ministry has yet received any specific instruction to determine and undertake projects under the government' s newly introduced concept of public private partnership (PPP).
Even no legal or institutional framework is available to them to move forward any project under the PPP model, officials said.
The government in the 2009-10 budget promised to implement a number of projects under PPP to achieve a higher GDP growth. PPP investment envisaged in infrastructure development, power and energy, ports, communication, supply of drinking water and waste management, education and health.
