Charges to prove wrong if ministry papers checked: Mainul Staff Reporter Barrister Mainul Hosein, former adviser to the Caretaker Government, has said the allegations raised against him in the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Housing and Public Works Ministry are baseless. Those will be proved if one goes through the relevant papers of the ministry, he said. Talking to journalists he said, “we wanted to establish that nobody is above law. So, I have no objection to any investigation against me”. I think the Parliamentary Standing Body is being misled by raising the baseless allegations because of anger of certain people.  |
AL, JP leaders among 3 killed in gun attack

Three persons including two local leaders of Awami League and Jatiya Party were shot dead and another one was injured by some unidentified gunmen in front of the 1 DIT market at Karwan Bazar in the capital yesterday. The deceased were identified as Faruq Molla, 55, a local leader of Jatiya Party and general secretary of Karwanbazaar Fruits Traders' Association, Mohammed Ashraf Mia, 50, senior vice-president of Awami League, Ward Number 39 of Dhaka City Corporation and Nuruddin Sarkar Jewel, 35, a pedestrian. Abdur Rahim, 55, a homeopath practitioner of the area, sustained bullet injuries.  |
BNP seeks UN probe into govt oppression: Renata’s controversial role criticised

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) yesterday requested the United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to conduct an independent inquiry into government's repression on the opposition political parties in the country since January 11, 2007. The main opposition party made the request to the UN Secretary General in a memorandum marking the International Day against Torture. Prof MA Mannan, joint secretary general of BNP submitted the memorandum at the UN's Dhaka office at IDB Bhaban. Kazi Ali Reza, officer in charge of United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) received the memorandum.  |
Michael Jackson dead

Michael Jackson, the child star turned King of Pop who set the world dancing but whose musical genius was overshadowed by a bizarre lifestyle and sex scandals, died on Thursday. He was 50. Jackson was pronounced dead at 2:26 p.m. PDT (9:26 p.m. EDT) after arriving at a Los Angeles hospital in full cardiac arrest, said Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County Coroner's office. The cause of death was not known and an autopsy would likely take place on Friday, he said. Jackson was taken ill at home and his personal physician tried to resuscitate him but could not, his brother Jermaine told reporters.  |
BIT observes graduation ceremony

Bangladesh International Tutorial (BIT), an English Medium School, yesterday observed its 27th founding anniversary and organized Graduation Ceremony 2009 for the Ordinary and Advanced Level classes at its Uttara campus with festivity. About 140 students from Ordinary and Advanced Level classes received their graduation certificates this year. The top meritorious students for their good results and some teachers for their dedication for bringing out the good results were welcomed with crests.  |
Vested group in admn out to hinder dev: Muhith UNB, Dhaka
Finance Minister AMA Muhith yesterday accused a section of officials in the administration of hindering development programmes like introducing e-governance thinking those could be counterproductive to their vested interests. "There are vested groups in the administration who never want such development that can affect their interest," he told a seminar on budget 2009-10 at Sonargaon Hotel, amid issues raised by the speakers for making way for 'Digital Bangladesh'. "Implementation of the e-governance won't be possible through fighting with them, through imposing orders.  |
