Home Minister on BDR carnage: Legal action for failure to give information Staff Reporter
The government will take legal action against the intelligence for failure in providing advance information regarding the BDR carnage on 25 and 26 February in the BDR headquarters. A probe committee is also being formed for the fair and neutral investigation in this regard, Home Minister Adv Sahara Khatun said yesterday at her office after the third meeting of the cabinet committee on law and order. 'Steps will be taken against those responsible after fixing responsibility," she said.  |
Moderate rain bring relief

The much sought-after rainfall yesterday noon, though short-lived, brought some relief to the dwellers of Dhaka city who have been reeling under sweltering heat for the last several weeks. The sky also cried at Dinajpur, Syedpur, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chandpur, Feni, Srimangal and Sylhet yesterday. There was two-millimetre rainfall in the capital. One millimetre rainfall was recorded in Sylhet and Rangpur, according to Met Office. Dr Nazrul Islam, an official of SAARC Met Research Centre, said the chances of heavy rainfall in the month of June and July are very slim.  |
Six more Swine Flu patients detected UNB, Dhaka
Six more Bangladesh citizens, who came here from the United States, were tested positive of Influenza A (H1N1), commonly known as swine flu, a doctor said yesterday. Dr Mahmudur Rahman, the government spokesperson on swine flu, told a health seminar and press briefing in the city that they conducted tests on 28 suspects who mostly came from the USA on June 14 and detected positive influenza virus H1N1. Also Director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Diseases Control and Research, and of the National Influenza Center, said the patients, aged 2 to 20 years, are not serious and kept in home confinement.  |
Proclamation of independence: SC declines to interfere with HC verdict Staff Reporter
The Supreme Court (SC) yesterday refrained from passing any order on the High Court (HC) judgement that declared Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, not Ziaur Rahman, as proclaimer of Bangladesh's independence in 1971. Chamber judge of the Appellate Division Justice MA Aziz yesterday refrained from passing any order on the provisional leave-to-appeal petition filed against the HC judgement. After a brief hearing, the Chamber Judge passed 'no order' on the petition which was filed by Wing Commander (retd) Hamidullah Khan Bir-Protik, a BNP leader.  |
Anti-graft drive was right: ACC Chief: None is above law

New Anticorruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Golam Rahman said the anticorruption drive conducted during the caretaker government was right. "The anticorruption drive was necessary, as many people used to think that they were above the law. But the commission has proved that none is above the law," said the new ACC chief while he was briefing journalists yesterday, the day he joined the office. He said, "Whoever is involving in corruption will be punished." Asked whether the ACC action was exaggerated in the name of anti-graft drive, Rahman said, "Many thought so.  |
Tipaimukh Dam: Govt will do whatever good for Bangladesh: PM UNB, Dhaka
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said her government would do whatever beneficial for Bangladesh on the question of India's Tipaikmukh Dam. She deplored that the Opposition Party, BNP, does not want a solution rather wants to keep the dam issue alive and play on it to mislead the people. On formation of Parliamentary Team to be sent to Tipaimukh Dam site, she said the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Water Resources Ministry sought names of BNP MPs but, instead of naming their MPs, they sent names of experts and a Jamaat MP.  |
Proper utilisation of allocation stressed: Accountability, transparency in local govt urged Staff Reporter Accountability and transparency should be established at the local government level to ensure proper implementation of the allocation in this sector. The allocation for the local development is merely1.43 percent of the total proposed budget where is far from the requirement. If accountability and transparency can be ensured and undesired interference of administration and MPs can be checked, the allocation would be utilised properly.  |
Commentary: The PM was right in exposing the conspiracy of the corrupt few The Prime Minister has reportedly decided to restrain Awami League leaders from speaking against the January 11 changeover of 2007 that in the ultimate analysis led to the December 29 election with the AL-led allies winning a stunning landslide victory. The decision was taken at a closed-door meeting of some members of the council of ministers after the regular weekly meeting of the Cabinet on Monday. It was felt that that the criticism of the 1/11 takeover and of the caretaker government often amounted to lending support to opposition voices.  |
