PM’s directive to party leaders: December 29 polls to be questionable if 1/11 changeover criticised

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed her party leaders not to speak against the 1/11 changeover and criticise the activities of the Caretaker Government of Fakhruddin Ahmed. The directives came at an unscheduled closed-door meeting followed by the cabinet meeting at Bangladesh Secretariat on Monday with the Prime Minister in the chair in the backdrop of opposition demand for the trial of just retired army chief Moeen U Ahmed.  |
60th Founding Anniversary observed: AL pledges to establish poverty-free country BSS, Dhaka
Bangladesh Awami League yesterday observed its 60th founding anniversary throughout the country with a pledge to establish a hunger-and-poverty-free and non-communal Bangladesh. The day's programme began at 5:30 am with the hoisting of national and party flags in party offices. The central programme included placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Bangabandhu Bhanan at 7 am in the city, rally from Shikha Chirantan in Suhrawardy Udyan, offering wreaths at the mazar of Bangabandhu in Tungipara, publication of supplementary in national dailies and cultural function at Paltan Maidan in the evening.  |

Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, the country's best medium pacer has been named captain of Bangladesh National Cricket team. The world's number one all-rounder of the ODI's according to ICC ranking Shakib Al Hasan will act as his deputy. Bangladesh Cricket Board has selected Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, the new captain of Bangladesh team instead of Mohammad Ashraful, who failed to show satisfactory performance in the recently concluded ICC World Cup Twenty20 Cricket Tournament in England. Bangladesh Cricket Board announced on Tuesday the new skipper of Bangladesh team and the 15-member squad of Bangladesh team for the upcoming West Indies tour.  |
Faruk Khan tells BGMEA, BKMEA: Apparel sector to get its due share in stimulus package Staff Reporter
Commerce Minister Faruk Khan yesterday assured apparel sector leaders that the industry would get its proper share from the stimulus package allocated in the proposed budget. The government will give a clear announcement soon in this regard, he said. His remarks came when leaders of Bangladesh garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) met him separately in his office. The leaders demanded a clear announcement from the government over their share on Tk 5,000 crore stimulus package that the government had allocated in the proposed budget for FY 2009-10.  |
Home Economics College closed sine die

Home Economics College (HEC) has been closed sine die following a clash between the college students and police leaving some injured and two vehicles vandalised yesterday noon. About 6 female students were injured in the incident, eyewitnesses said. Six other students of the college were arrested in this connection who were released later by the intervention of the principal. Sources said, at about 11 am the students held a demonstration in front of the college on the Mirpur road to press home their demand of declaring HEC as an institute of Dhaka University and also to protest the insulting behaviour by the college authorities to the guardians of the students who took part in this movement.  |
