Prices of cucumber sharply decrease in Gaibandha BSS, Gaibandha The prices of cucumber sharply decreased in all the local markets of Sadallapur upazila in the district in last few days resulting the farmers are in great troubles. Market sources said per maund (40 kg) of cucumber is being sold between Taka 60 and 70 in different markets of the upazila but 20 days ago the same was sold between Taka 200 and 250. Upazila agriculture office sources said, a total of 130 hectares of land have been brought under this cultivation with the production target of 1,300 metric tones of cucumber this season. Yakub Ali, a farmer of Bara Chhatragact village of the upazila said a good quantities of cucumber was produced in his land this season but he is not getting fair prices of the cucumber against its product and carryings cost for not having sufficient customer in the markets. Another farmer Abdul Jalil of Monglapara village of the upazila said he will face a huge loss this year if the prices of the cucumber are not increased significantly within few days. The farmers urged the concerned authorities to take proper initiatives to marketize the cucumber produced in the upazila this year in other markets of the country as early as possible to make them economically benefited. Talking to the BSS upazila agriculture officer M Obaidur Rahman Mondal said a bumper production of cucumber was achieved in this upazila this year for providing them with fertilizers insecticides and other agri inputs at fair prices. The farmers are being compelled to sell those in local markets at low prices for not having proper marketing system between the upazila and other parts of the country.
