Raise Tipaimukh issue in Int’l for a: JU teachers Staff Reporter Over 50 teachers of Jahangirnagar University under the banner of Jahangirnagar University Nationalist Teachers' Forum yesterday staged demonstration and condemned the silence of the government on Tipaimukh Dam issue while the Indian government is going to construct the dam soon on Borak River at the upper stream of the river Surma and Kushiara. In a joint statement, the teachers said that in spite of there being strong protests from the people of different states of India and also in Bangladesh, the Indian government intends to implement the construction of the dam and the Monipur state government has formulated Special Proposed Vehicles (SVS) for speedy implementation of the project. They called upon the government to raise the issue in the international fora and urged upon the ministers not to deliver controversial speeches alleging that India is constructing the dam violating the International River Law. The teachers who signed the statement, are Prof Khandaker Musttahidur Rahman, Prof Syed Ahdul Hye, Prof Md Enamul Haque Khan, Prof Mohammad Abdul Malek, Prof Mirza Mofiz Uddin, Prof Shahabuddin Kabir Chowdhury, Prof Syed Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan, Prof AKM Abul Kalam, Prof M Nurul Islam, Prof Md Monjurul Karim, Prof Md Salahuddin, Dr Suma Mumtaj, Dr Mahfuza Sharifa Sultana and Dr Ashrafuzzaman. Meanwhile, President of Sylhet Division Development Action Council (SDDAC) Advocate Abed Raza and General Secretary Md Najmul Islam Naj protested the controversial speech of Indian High Commissioner Pinak Ranjan Chakrabarti who recently said that the construction of Tipaimukh dam was not violation of International River Law. In a joint statement, they demanded removal of the High Commissioner without delay.
