Trains collide head-on at Kamalapur: One killed, eight including security personnel injured

Two trains collided head-on at Kamalapur railway station yesterday afternoon leaving at least one dead and eight others including two security personnel of Railway injured. Nahid Hossain, railway security guard who was taken to the orthopaedic hospital in a critical condition succumbed to the injuries. The security personnel who were seriously injured were admitted to Dhaka medical college hospital. Of them Nahid was shifted to Orthopaedic hospital.  |
RAB nabs JMB IT chief, 3 others

The Rapid Action battalion (RAB) on Sunday night arrested banned Jama'atul Mujahidin Bangladesh's (JMB) information technology (IT) chief and three other members of the wing in separate drives in the capital and Mymensingh areas. RAB seized five detonators, two grenade covers, a binocular, a laptop and a number of books from their possession, official sources said yesterday. A Rab team raided city's Pallabi area on Sunday night and arrested IT chief Mohammad Emranul Haque, also an explosive expert. He is also known as Rajib, Mainul, Abu Toba and Iqbal.  |
Country loses 20,000 km river routes

The waterways of Bangladesh now come under threat due to losing river routes over the years. The waterways are still considered as a cheap, safe and comfortable communication system in the country. According to the sources in the Ministry of Shipping, about 20,000 km out of 26,000 km of river routes of the country has already disappeared due to silt in the river beds. Besides, a number of rivers having strong current died due to lack of dredging on time, sources said.  |
DU teacher’s wife killed in accident: Violence on campus, 7 cars vandalised DU Correspondent
Anima Rani Shaha (56), wife of Prof Parimal Kumar Shaha of IER, Dhaka University, was killed when a private car hit her from behind on the university campus yesterday. The accident took place on the road beside the Jagannath Hall of the university. Eyewitnesses said, at about 7 am a private car (Dhaka metro 'ga'-11-8612) rammed Mrs Anima while she was walking through the footpath. The injured was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital as she sustained injuries in head and waist. The on duty doctors declared her dead.  |
Prof Emajuddin decries comments in HC verdict Staff Reporter
Prof Dr Emajuddin Ahmed, a member of the scrutiny committee of the liberation war documents, in a statement yesterday protested the second part of Sunday's High Court verdict regarding the declaration of the country's independence. The verdict of a High Court Division bench is that the scrutiny committee has worked against the country's interest by distorting the history of the declaration of independence intentionally. The High Court in its verdict said the scrutiny committee has bluffed the people by adding untrue information on proclamation of the independence.  |
Raise Tipaimukh issue in Int’l for a: JU teachers Staff Reporter
Over 50 teachers of Jahangirnagar University under the banner of Jahangirnagar University Nationalist Teachers' Forum yesterday staged demonstration and condemned the silence of the government on Tipaimukh Dam issue while the Indian government is going to construct the dam soon on Borak River at the upper stream of the river Surma and Kushiara. In a joint statement, the teachers said that in spite of there being strong protests from the people of different states of India and also in Bangladesh, the Indian government intends to implement the construction of the dam and the Monipur state government has formulated Special Proposed Vehicles (SVS) for speedy implementation of the project.  |
