Mujib, not Zia, proclaimed independence: HC UNB, Dhaka
The High Court Sunday declared illegal and unconstitutional the latest official document recognising the then Major Ziaur Rahman as the proclaimer of Bangladesh's independence, as the political controversy was taken for a judicial resolution. Delivering the judgment on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) writ petition, a division bench comprising Justice ABM Khairul Haque and Justice M Momtazuddin Ahmed proscribed the controversial 2004 edition of the historical document titled Bangladesh War of Liberation inserting Ziaur Rahman as the proclaimer of Bangladesh's independence.  |
ICC World Twenty20: Pakistan clinch title
Sports Reporter Pakistan clinched the title of the ICC World Cup Twenty20 Cricket Championship when they defeated the runners-up Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the final at Lord’s in London on Sunday. Coin-favoured Sri Lanka scored 138 for the loss of six wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. In reply, Pakistan sailed home in 18.4 overs making 139 for the loss of two wickets. Shahid Afridi notched up an unbeaten 54 playing 40 deliveries. He sent the ball two times through the ropes and two times over the fence.  |
Summoning of Sircar, Hamid, Delwar: JS body cannot probe corruption charges Staff Reporter
The appearance of former Speaker Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, Deputy Speaker Akhtar Hamid Siddiqui and former Chief Whip Khandker Delwar Hossain before the parliamentary probe committee on June 27, seems to be uncertain. Akhtar Hamid Siddiqui talking to The New Nation said yesterday afternoon he did not receive the parliamentary sub-committee letter. The decision whether to appear before the meeting or not, he said, would depend on the contents of the letter. Khandker Delwar Hossain is at the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of the Birdem for treatment.  |
No Int’l law can stop Tipaimukh Dam: Pinak says at friendship society meet

Indian High Commissioner Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty yesterday said his country had consulted with Bangladesh on the construction of the Tipaimukh Dam. There has been a lot of agitation of the issue on Tipaimukh Dam. I reiterate that it is a hydro-electric multi-purpose project to produce electricity. There is no international law that could stop India from implementing the Tipaimukh Dam," he said at a seminar on 'South Asian Connectivity' organised by Bangladesh-India Friendship Society at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the capital.  |
Use of AC at Secretariat : PM’s directive ignored Shamim Jahangir
The Government officials do not carry out the Prime Minister directive as regards the use Air Condition (AC) as a part of electricity saving measure at the Bangladesh Secretariat. Different Ministries in the Secretariat were consuming 2.5MW of electricity daily of which nearly 2MW of electricity for running 700 ACs, Public Works Department (PWD) sources said yesterday. According to the PM's directives, officials of the rank of Secretary, Additional Secretary and Joint Secretary of different ministries in the Secretariat are entitled to use AC.  |

There are scopes for changes in budget

Commerce Minister Faruq Khan on Sunday said the government might make some changes in the proposed budget for fiscal 2009-10 if the people want. "This is just a proposed budget, there are scopes for changes," he said at a roundtable on 'World recession and proposed budget: Context of housing industry' held at Sonargaon Hotel in the city. Ittefaq Group of Publications organised the roundtable chaired by Prof Dr M Shahidul Amin. Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) president Annisul Huq and REHAB president Tanveerul Huq Probal were, among others, present at the roundtable.  |
Abul Hasnat sent to jail

Former Chief Whip of Parliament and Awami League leader fugitive Abul Hasnat Abdullah surrendered to the Special Judge Court No.2 yesterday and the Judge Amar Kumar Roy passed orders to send him to jail. On December 12 of 2007 Hasnat Abdullah was sentenced to thirteen years imprisonment for concealing information about his wealth and for evading income tax to the tune of Taka one crore fifteen lakh fifty-six thousand 398. On March 3 last year he was awarded imprisonment for nine years.  |
