Serious conflict since ’79 revolution: Fierce clashes in Tehran

Police beat protesters and fired tear gas and water cannons at thousands who rallied Saturday in open defiance of Iran's clerical government, sharply escalating the most serious internal conflict since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Eyewitnesses described fierce clashes near Revolution Square in central Tehran after some 3,000 protesters, many wearing black, chanted "Death to the dictator!" and "Death to dictatorship!" Police fired tear gas, water cannons and guns but it was not immediately clear if they were firing live ammunition.

CID tracing Ctg arms source

After making "significant progress" in recent interrogations of former NSI and CUFL officials in the 2004 Chittagong 10-truck arms case, the Criminal Investigation Department is now turning its investigations towards tracing the source of the weapons consignment.
Following interrogations, CID says it has evidence of the involvement of Pakistani intelligence agency ISI, Pakistan-based firm ARY and Indian separatist organisation Ulfa.
But the source of arms was yet to be unearthed.

Money whitening provision to be modified
UNB, Dhaka

Finance Minister AMA Muhith yesterday hinted at modifying the budgetary provision allowing amnesty to whiten black money and doing something about tax imposed on mobile phone sets in the new budget.
"It'll have to be modified in one way or the other," he told a dialogue on the new budget amid widespread criticism about the amnesty to the black money holders.
He also took note of the criticism over imposing vat on manpower export.
The minister was addressing the dialogue titled 'State of the Bangladesh Economy and Budget Responses 2009-10' Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) organised at a city hotel.

Lanka-Pakistan T20 final today

Less than four months after they were cowering on the floor of a bus in Lahore, under attack from terrorists, Sri Lanka's cricketers will take on Pakistan in the Twenty20 World Cup final today at Lord's in London.

And after its emphatic 57-run win over West Indies in Friday's semifinal at The Oval, Sri Lanka's captain Kumar Sangakkara reflected on what reaching the final means to his team while providing an eloquent account of how the attack affected it.
"It's fitting reward for our courage and the way we have played in this tournament," Sangakkara said.

Disabled Welfare Act to be updated: Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the government will update the Disabled Welfare Act'2000 and take special measures for education, employment, movement and communications of the physically challenged people.
She also urged all to cooperate with the physically challenged people with love and fraternity to ensure the flourishing of their merit and talent.
"A team of so-called disabled players from Bangladesh won 21 gold medals in an Olympic competition in the USA after we came to power in 1996. So disability is not a disease.

Adequate allocations for disabled demanded

BSS, Rangpur

Leaders of disabled organisations at a press conference here on Saturday demanded revision of the inadequate allocations in the proposed national budget for ensuring their development, empowerment, rights and social security.
They also thanked the government for increasing various allocations, allowances and number of beneficiary distressed disabled persons for their rehabilitations, one-stop-services and assistances and education and exempting income taxes up to Taka 1.80 lakh.
