Swine flu case detected in Bangladesh

Bangladesh yesterday announced detection of first case of deadly swine flu in a body of a non-resident Bangladeshi who just returned from United States of America (USA), according to a Health Ministry press statement.
Examining the throat swab and nasal wash samples of the person, whose identity was not disclosed, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control & Research and Influenza Centre (IEDCR) and the International Centre for Diarrheal Diseases and Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) jointly confirmed the presence of H1N1 virus responsible for the deadly flu, the statement elaborates.

Clock reset one hour ahead: Daylight saving time introduced

Clocks in the country were reset an hour ahead at 11pm last night as the energy-starved nation introduced Daylight Saving Time (DST) for 'an extra hour of daylight' in a bid to save power.
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina released a special commemorative stamp from her Jamuna residence at 11pm, as clocks across the country were reset an hour ahead to 12 midnight.
A cabinet meeting chaired by Hasina on June 1 decided to put toward the clock by one hour.
DST is practised in many countries, exploiting daylight by advancing clocks so that evenings have more natural light and mornings have less.

Manipur activist against sending BD team to Tipaimukh site

Ramanda, an activist against the construction of Tipaimukh dam in the Manipur state of India told a conference in Dhaka yesterday that sending of a team from Bangladesh to the proposed Tipaimukh dam site will be a mistake.
Addressing a daylong national conference on Tipaimukh dam organised by Angikar Bangladesh, an environmental NGO, he said the people of the north-eastern state of India were against the construction of the proposed dam because of the threat of environment degradation and loss of livelihood that it poses.

BNP leader gunned down

Unidentified criminals gunned down a ward level BNP leader at Mohammadpur in the capital early Friday morning.
The deceased was identified as Monjur Morshed Shipu, 40, joint convenor of 44-ward committee of BNP. He hailed from Hossainpur of Chatkhil upazila in Noakhali .
Family sources said Shipu along with his wife returned to their Mohammadia Housing Society house around 11:00pm yesterday. As he was about to park his car unidentified miscreants numbering 7 to 8 came in a microbus and abducted him.
