General Moeen U Ahmed, the man behind the Fakhruddin's Caretaker Government, is still in the newspaper headlines even after his retirement as the Chief of the Army Staff. The newspapers are replete with stories and counter-stories about his next job in the country or outside. Speculation is ripe that he is going to succeed Ismat Jahan as permanent representative to the UN. Ismat Jahan who ran into a controversy over marrying a foreigner had been transferred to Belgium. Belgium was a buffer state between Germany and France during the world war.  |
Language hero Gaziul Haque passes away

Gaziul Haque, a top language-movement hero, passed away yesterday at the age of 80 after prolonged illness. Also a valiant freedom fighter, Gaziul Haque had been suffering from various ailments like diabetes, heart disease and old-age complications. He was admitted to Square Hospital in the capital on Tuesday morning and died there yesterday afternoon, sending a shock wave across the country, especially through politico-intellectual circles. His first namaj-e-zanaja will be held at the national Baitul Mukarram Mosque at 10am today.  |
Maritime boundary dispute with India, Myanmar: Dhaka will raise issue at UN Staff Reporter
Bangladesh is going to raise its objection at the United Nations shortly to India and Myanmar's claims over certain areas in the Bay of Bengal which has led to disputes over delimitation of maritime boundaries, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) yesterday. She also informed the House that the government has decided in principle to connect Bangladesh with the Asian Highway. The Prime Minister's question-answers were tabled in the House to allow budget discussion earlier.  |
Train hits bus, cars at Moghbazar: 2 hurt

At least two women were injured and three private cars and a public bus badly damaged when a train hit the bus at the city's Moghbazar level-crossing Wednesday. Quoting witnesses, police said the accident occurred at about 5pmwhen the Baha-durabad Ghat-bound train hit the bus that eventually dashed three nearby cars as the gatemen could not pull down the iron bar due to traffic jam. The injured were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. One of them was identified as Shahida, 35, of the city's Madhubagh area.  |
Tipaimukh Dam: BCU forms human chain

Bangladesh Chhatra Union (BCU) yesterday formed a human chain at Muktangan in the city demanding stopping of the construction of Tipaimukh dam at the upper reaches of rivers Surma and Kushiara near the border of Zakigonj of Sylhet. Led by President of the organisation Khan Asaduzzaman Masum and General Secretary Manobendra Deb, the human chain was participated, among others by Organising Secretary of the organisation Ferdous Ahmed Ujjal, President of city unit Mahmudur Rahman Biral, President of DU unit Abu Toyeb Apu, President of Jahangirnagar University unit SM Shuva and leader of DU unit Avinu Kibria.  |
Photographer sued for alleged intrusion into Indian territories, court grants bail

A court here yesterday granted bail to renowned Bangladeshi photojournalist Dr Shahidul Alam in a case filed against him by BDR troops on charge of intruding into Indian territories during his photographic work. Bangladesh Rifles Roumari company commander Daud Ali filed the case against him with Roumari Police Station in the morning following the allegation from the Indian Border Security Force (BSF). Earlier on Tuesday evening, BSF troops detained him when he was taking photographs in Natunbandar area along Bangladesh's Roumari frontier.  |
Whitening of black money under fire in JS Staff Reporter
BNP chairperson and opposition leader Begum Khaleda Zia came under sharp attacks and bitter criticism by the treasury bench members, as the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) yesterday opened general debate over the national budget for fiscal 2009-10 amidst continued abstention by the opposition members. They said that ex-prime minister Khaleda Zia and her finance minister Saifur Rahman had washed their black money white by paying penalty which was a shame to the nation. The ruling alliance MPs praised Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith for preparing what they called a pro-people and pro-development budget.  |
