Goose farming on rise in western districts

Farming of goose in the western districts is on the rise and the flocks of these goose attracts eyes of all if anyone visit the western districts like Meherpur, Chuadanga, Jhenaidah and Jessore.

The poor families of the districts area rearing the goose, which are helping them in eliminating poverty.

Goose farming on commercial basis began about 15 years ago in Meherpur district, which spilled through the nearby areas and districts. The flocks drew the attention of onlookers. The flocks are seen floating on rivers, water bodies and fields on these districts.

If anybody passes through the roads of Jhenaidah, Chuadanga, -

Meherpur, Kathuli-Gan-gni, Mujibnagar, Moheshpur, Shamonta, Chowgacha-Moheshpur and Damurhuda-Carpashdanga will see groups plenty of such goose are roaming on the water bodies or grounds. Farmers are also farming of the goose.

Poultry and animal husbandry department so-urces said people are farming goose in large numbers in these districts. The sources said about 40,000 goose are being reared in the western districts. Farming of the poultry bird is not a profiting business, but they are beautiful to see.

Zahurul Islam and Abdul Hannan of the village Kulpala of Alamdanga upazila said goose lays eggs twice a year and five-seven eggs they lay one time and one baby goose of a week is sold at Taka 70 to 80 taka. More older baby goose is sold at Taka 120 to 125 per baby. Demand for a baby goose in markets is high. If babies are sold, then one can earn from a pair of goose over one thousand taka a year. If the grown up geese are sold, in that case the earnings will be more.
