Another Dawood cohort arrested

Another suspected associate of Indian underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, Arif Hossain was arrested in Dhaka on Saturday and was taken to remand yesterday for seven days for interrogation.
Detective police produced Arif Hossain before the court and sought 10-day remand. After hearing, Metropolitan Magistrate Tania Kamal placed Arif on seven day's remand.
Three other associates of Dawood, who were arrested earlier, were also taken on fresh remand after they were produced before the same court on completion of their eight-day remand.

Hunger-free world for children urged

UNB, Dhaka

Thousands of children who know what it feels like to be hungry took to the streets yesterday, together with caring citizens, in a worldwide walk to raise awareness on child hunger.
In Bangladesh, WFP with its partners, families and friends joined the walk to focus on hunger that kills one child every six seconds globally.
This annual walk aims at raising public awareness about global hunger as well as raising funds for WFP's School Feeding programme was held in Dhaka and Jessore, said a WFP press release yesterday.

AL central working body meet: Ministers under fire

Seven Ministers of the Awami League government came under fire in the party central working committee meeting held on Saturday at its Dhanmondi political office.
They are Finance Minister A M A Muhit, Commerce Minister Farooq Khan, Law Minister Shafiq Ahmed, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni and Water Resources Minister Ramesh Chandra Sen and State Minister for Home Affairs Tanjim Ahmed Sohel Taj.
Kazi Zafarullah, a senior Awami League leader while addressing the meeting said, the foreign ministry needed a regular spokesman like India and Pakistan.

DSE turnover rises to Tk 7.81bn: Speculation, buying spree push up stock market

Driven by huge price rise of shares of banks and financial institutions the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) yesterday experienced the second biggest single day gain of the year pushing up the DSE General Index to 2790 from Thursday's 2683 points.
The speculation of reduction of corporate tax of the banking companies and allowing black money in the stock market drove the share price of banks and financial institutions in the days trading. The reduction of corporate tax in the next budget is likely to help increase the profitability.

Women MPs vow to unite for political empowerment

Women lawmakers of the ninth parliament at an orientation programme yesterday pledged to work together for empowering the womenfolk politically and towards removing disparity between men and women.
They said it is time all women stood under a single umbrella and worked on a common agenda to serve society and the nation.
"Formation of a 'caucus' with all-party participation of women lawmakers can be the best solution for empowering women politically which will play a role in bringing about positive changes in society," Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni said while wrapping up the second day's orientation programme held at Hotel Sonargaon.

DU Senate election held

The final phase of Dhaka University Registered Graduate election to elect 25 representatives to Senate was held yesterday amid tension, vote rigging and harassment of teachers.
Some 10,878 registered graduates of the university out of 26,077 cast their votes in the election. The vote counting will be held today and the result will be published tomorrow.
From the beginning of the election, activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Jubo League and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) took position at the entrance of the election centers with respective badge of the panels.

Women surpass men in UK universities

Female students are ahead of men in almost every measure of UK university achievement, according to a report from higher education researchers.
A Higher Education Policy Institute report shows that women are more likely to get places in the top universities and go on to get better grades.
Women also outnumber men in high status subjects, such as law and medicine.
The institute's director, Bahram Bekhradnia, says the cause of this gender gap remains uncertain.
Women have been entering university in greater numbers than men in recent years - with the participation rate for young women standing at 49%, compared with 38% of young men.
