Tk 1.1 lakh crore budget in the offing: No tax holiday, no rise of tax-free income

The Government is preparing a big size budget for the fiscal year 2009-10 which may be between Tk 1.10 lakh crore and 1.15 lakh crore while the revenue earnings target will be around Tk 80,000 crore, official sources said yesterday.
The current budget is Tk 99,962 crore which saw a big curtail due to poor implementation of this year's Annual Development Programme (ADP).
For the next budget the National Economic Council has already approved a Tk 30,500-crore ADP, which is Tk 4,900 crore more than the current ADP and Tk 7,500 crore higher than the revised one.

Karnaphuli dying: Industrial, clinical wastes blamed

The Karnaphuli River, considered as the lifeline to business activities for both the hill people and the flatlanders in the country's far east region, is dying due to mindless encroachment, dumping of industrial and clinical wastes, and lack of maintenance.
Encroachment of the river banks, unabated dumping of industrial, clinical and human wastes, unplanned fishing, unchecked oil spill from oceangoing vessels and mechanized boats have severely polluted the river.
"The river has been desecrated. What is flowing there is mainly sewage and polluted water.

Brown awaits reshuffle response

Gordon Brown is waiting to see whether his limited cabinet reshuffle has served to quell unrest among Labour MPs after a tumultuous week for the party.
The prime minister responded to a string of ministerial resignations and a "painful" English elections drubbing by vowing: "I will not walk away."
Labour is bracing itself for Sunday's European election results.
Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw said he hoped Labour activists would give MPs the message to "rally round" Brown.
Bradshaw, promoted in the reshuffle, said the PM was the best man to lead the UK during the current economic crisis.

CPD opposes legalising of undisclosed money: 5.88 pc lowest GDP in five years apprehended

Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), an economy research body, has suggested to energise investment, consolidate agriculture, protect external sector, strengthen public finance and revive development administration for the sustainable economy of the country.
CPD remarked yesterday at a press briefing on the economy for 2008-2009 fiscal year at its Dhanmondi office in the city.
Eminent economist Debapriya Bhattacharya briefed journalists, while Prof Mustafizur Rahman presented the keynote paper. Dr. Uttam Kumar Deb and other officials of the CPD were present at the briefing.

Bid to create employment: Nat’l service programme begins next fiscal

UNB, Dhaka

Finance Minister AMA Muhith yesterday said a national service programme will be introduced in the next fiscal year to appoint to the public services for two years the students who will complete higher secondary education.
"A budgetary allocation will be made in the next budget for this purpose," he told a press briefing at NEC conference room, adding that the programme will be launched in 2-3 upazilas in fiscal 2009-10 and would be expanded gradually.
