Shortage of cyclone shelters: 12 lakh people in coastal areas remain vulnerable

Nearly 12 lakh extremely poor people in 15 coastal districts of the country remain exposed to the fury of cyclone every year due to inadequate cyclone centre.
Majority of the people who lost their lives in the in the cyclone Aila that battered 11 coastal districts a few days ago belonged to the extreme poor bracket. They could not take shelter for their safety because of inadequate shelter.
A total of 12 lakh hard core poor out of 26.46 lakh have no access to the 2,729 cyclone shelter centres in those coastal districts, sources in the Food and Disaster Management told the New Nation yesterday.

Gaffar Chowdhury gets Manik Mia Gold Medal: Courageaus journalism for people’s welfare recalled

The Manik Mia Gold Medal was awarded to eminent columnist Abdul Gaffer Chowdhury for journalism with a call to promote honest and courageous journalism to ensure that the people can lead hazard-free life with peace and happiness.
The gold medal introduce by the Manik Mia Foundation was presented to Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury by Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad Abdul Hamid Advocate.
Barrister Mainul Hosein, chairman of the foundation and chairman of the editorial board of the New Nation and the Daily Ittefaq, handed over the citation and a cheque for Taka one lakh.

Khaleda warns govt: Movement if anti-state works not stopped

BNP chairperson and opposition leader Khaleda Zia yesterday said her party's hands of cooperation would turn into a movement if it does not refrain from anti-state and anti-people activities.
"We want peace and progress. So we're still extending hands of cooperation to the government. Still, we don't want to go on any movement. But, we'll take our hands of cooperation off and expand the hands of movement if any activity against the interest of the country and its people take place," she told a discussion meeting.

WFP feeding programme in schools suspended: Samples sent to Dhaka, Bangkok for lab tests

The United Nations World Food Programme-run feeding programme for 76 primary schools and non-formal Para education centers was suspended Tuesday as 428 students fell sick after eating biscuits on Monday.
Official and local sources said the students of eight primary schools in Laxmichhari upazila of the hill district on Monday morning suffered stomach upset after taking biscuits distributed under the WFP recipe meant for improving nutritional status of the hill children.
The UN food agency also runs such free feeding operations in some other parts of the country.
