Manik Mia’s death anniversary today

The 40th anniversary of death of the legendary journalist Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia will be observed today (Monday) in a befitting manner.
On this day in 1969, Manik Mia, the spiritual son of democracy, a relentless fighter of Bengali cause and founder editor of the Daily Ittefaq, breathed his last at the age of 58 only.
To mark his anniversary of death, different socio-cultural organisations have taken up elaborate programmes including placing of wreaths at his mazar, offering fateha, arranging Qurankhwani and milad mahfil, and holding of discussions on the eventful life and works of the late journalist.

Budget to be placed in JS on June 11: Deposition of Sircar, others on graft charges put on hold

The new government's maiden budget, attuned to its ambitious agenda for a change, will be placed in parliament on June 11, a parliamentary body decided yesterday, putting on the backburner the corruption probe against the Sircar-Siddiqui-Delwar trio.
"In view of the busy schedules of all as regards the budget session, a decision was adopted to defer the date for submission by former Speaker Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, former deputy Speaker Akhtar Hamid Siddiqui and former chief whip Khandaker Delwar Hossain," says a release quoting the parliamentary probe panel.

Coastal areas still bearing brunt of storm Aila

Coastal areas and other parts of the district lying in the country's south-western region is still bearing the brunt of devastating cyclone Aila that has swept most villages with tidal surges leaving the affected areas to still reel under water.
Thousands of people were rendered homeless as the storm with 8 to 13 feet tidal surges hit the district on May 25, leaving a vast trail of wreckage, breaking flood protection embankments at 25 points and submerging at least 75 villages in the district.
At least 78 unions under seven upzilas of the district were affected by the cyclone Aila.

A group trying to recapture Ctg Port: Matin

Former shipping adviser MA Matin has rebuffed the allegations against him and says 'a group' is trying to bring the Chittagong port back to the days before Jan 11, 2007 to commit corruption.
He claimed that a specific group is being 'favoured' to spoil the successes in the last two years in improving the skill and speed of work in the port, increasing the average time of anchorage of the ships and in eliminating corruption.
Matin said he is being made the 'scapegoat' for not giving work order to the company favoured by the group.

PM opens tree plantation drive: Mangrove forest in coastal belt urged
UNB, Dhaka

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday underscored the need for creating mangrove forests in the country's coastal belt to save the people and the territories from natural calamities like cyclonic storms, water upsurge and increasing rise of water level.
She also said the government has planned to set up embankments with adequate height and strength to face the water upsurge and flooding caused by the storms in the coastal areas.
Besides, the government has already taken up a project to conduct capital and maintenance dredging in the major rivers to save the localities from unexpected flooding, she said.

Planned family for nat’l uplift stressed

Speakers at a daylong workshop here on Sunday underscored the need for a concerted effort of all quarters to make the family planning activities a total success for economic growth and social development.
In this context, they also stressed that wide-ranging promotion along with intensifying its grassroots activities has become indispensable in the overpopulated and limited resources country for the sake of its overall success.
Directorate of Family Planning (DFP) hosted the seminar styled "Demand Creation for Family Planning Methods- a way to achieve sustainability" at the Pick Cassia Conference hall of Zafar Imman Tennis Complex.
