EC mulls over electronic voting system Rafiqul Islam Azad
The Election Commission (EC) is contemplating introducing electronic voting machine during parliamentary and local government elections replacing the existing ballot papers' voting system, according to a highly placed source. The Commission is considering the electronic voting system with a view to avoiding violence, difficulties in counting votes and grabbing polling centres. The Commission is likely to hold a meeting soon to take a decision in this regard the source said. The elections commissioners are considering the matter in the light of their experience gathered from visit to India.  |
Comprehensive industrial policy soon: 8th sea-going exported ship launched

Industries Minister Dilip Barua yesterday said that the government is going to formulate a comprehensive Industrial Policy very soon to patronize the private sector as the main thrust of industrialization. Stressing on Public-Private Partnership for the sake of better investment and deeper industrialization, he said political stability could enhance proper industrialization in the country. He delivered his speech at the Launching Programme of the 8th ship, namely Stella Moon, of Ananda Shipyard and Slipways Ltd, a co-organization of Ananda Group at Meghnaghat of Sonargoan in Narayangonj as chief guest.  |
BDR Carnage: Probe body submits 309-page report

The Government committee probing the February 25-26 carnage at Bangladesh Rifles headquarters in Peelkhana submitted a 309 page voluminous report to the Home Ministry yesterday in which the entire command of the border force comprising army officers was eliminated. The Government probe committee chief Anisuzzaman Khan told reporters after handing over the report to Home Minister Sahara Khatun at the Secretariat that we've based the report on truth and reality. There is nothing based on speculation. In reply to reporters on why the border guards went on rampage, Khan uttered just one word 'revolt.  |
Works of MPs, UZ chairmen to be balanced: PM UNB, Dhaka
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday said the local-government system would be strengthened through striking balance of power and coordination in function between Members of Parliament and Upazila Chairmen. She also said her government believes in decentralization of administrative power as their highest priority is to ensure maximum welfare of the mass people. The Prime Minister made the remarks when Ambassador of Switzerland Dora Rapold, also Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, paid a farewell call on her at the Prime Minister's Office.  |
Khaleda asks Jubo Dal leaders: Work more for party UNB, Dhaka
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has said her party will be reorganized through vesting leadership responsibilities in the new committees in different tiers on the basis of skill and transparency to strengthen the former ruling party, which suffered a setback in the recent past. "Who deserves which position will be given that responsibility," she was quoted by meeting sources as saying at a closed-door meeting with the founder- leaders and members of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal at her Gulshan office on Wednesday night.  |
President for IT-based curriculum at varsities

President Zillur Rahman on Thursday laid emphasis on introducing IT based education at university level in line with the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's call for making 'Digital Bangladesh' by 2021. "Quality of education and inclusion of IT at both public and private universities must be ensured for advancement of the country towards prosperity," he said while Vice Chancellors (VC) of seven public and private universities called on him at Bangabhaban here. During the meeting, the President said the present government put highest emphasis on education sector to ensure education for all citizens of the country.  |
Local opinion should be reflect in budget Staff Reporter
Budget should be planned with the advocacy of local representatives to make it fruitful. But the advocacy of local representatives is not sought for the 2009-10 budget. Speakers said this while addressing a roundtable yesterday. They said the allocation for local government in the budget was not sufficient. That is why jurisdiction, responsibilities and power of local government should be definite and budget allocation should be increased in the same. The local government should also be given proper share of revenue.  |
Commentary: World can’t be indifferent about Suu Kyi's trial With barely a week before the end of the six-year detention given to Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar's military rulers have started another case against her which many believe is designed to prevent her and her party from participation in the forthcoming elections dubbed as the 'roadmap to democracy'. Police at the trial played video footage that one John Yettaw had filmed of himself inside the 63-year-old's lakeside home, where he spent two days earlier this month, said a spokesman for her National League for Democracy party.  |
