Human chain at Rupganj for stopping Balu river pollution

A Human chain was formed at Rupganj of Narayanganj district on Sunday last protesting against the pollution of Balu river water and quicken the work of the bridge over the river.

"Sarbaik Manab Unnayan Shangathan" organized the human chain at the Kayetpara rivr bank. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nahid Sultana Mallick.

President of the organisation Bishersar Saha presided over a protest rally held before the human chair. Among others, Kayetpara UP chairman Gulzer Hossain, Ishak Ali, Rabi Roy, Shamsher Ali, Kamal Ahmed Ranju, Promila Rani Roy, Amena Akhter, Farid Ahmed addressed the rally.

The speakers said movements of millions of people living in the eastern regions of Dhaka is being hampered due to lack of a bridge on the Balu river.

If the contruction work of the bridge at Kayetpara is completed quickly, then over all development of the region will be faster. It was learnt that the construction of the bridge was started began in 2001 to be completed in twelve months. But the bridge is not yet complete. Nobody knows when the work of the 10 meter-long wide and 75.5 meter long bridge will be completed.

Part of two span out of the three pan bridge was complete so far.

The speakers said the waters of Bali river is badly polluted and the environment has become seriously affected. Even the fishes of the river cannot survive. They said the people living on the banks of the river are suffering various skin diseases.

They said the water of the river is being polluted with sewage and chemical waste rolling into the river.
